  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I will share something that has haunted me for almost 30 years . . .

When I was in college, I had a friend who was raised Catholic . . we were at a Catholic University and I was protestant . .

She was investigating Mormonism, and was battling depression . .

I knew enough about Mormonism to know it was a false religion . . but I wanted to give her something substantial . . so I went to the campus library and ther were original manuscripts with testimony about the beginning of the Mormon Church . . I found quite a bit to literally tear it down for her so she could see it for what it really was . . . I gave her the materials . .

This was just before break for the summer . . and she had decided not to become Mormon as a result of what I had given her . .

When I came back a few months later, I learned she had committed suicide . .

I have never forgotten this . . and I have tears in my eyes as I share this . . I will always wonder, "what if" I hadn't tried to so hard to dissaude her? Would she have found the help and support she needed and still be alive today?

I will never in this life know the answer to that question . . . . :( :crossrc:

Peace in Him!
therese, I am sorry about your friend :crossrc:

In regards to the sacraments someone posted above. Yes, it is true that many denom's have thrown them out all together. Some may still have 2 but not all. I found out first hand in a discussion with a Baptist friend when I asked him if he knew what the 7 sacraments were. He said he didn't so I explained each of the 7 sacraments and he didn't even know they are gifts (sacraments) from God for us to use. He along with many others don't believe in infant baptism, and confirmation. Many of them think their baptism is just for show to show the public their profession of faith and nothing else :sigh:

You are right, if it's not in the bible then they don't believe in it. I am sorry, but the protestant bible is not complete and full of many errors so I can understand why they don't believe in this stuff.

As someone else put it, just show them love, don't force it. If they come to you and ask questions about Catholocism then inform them. If you don't know the answer don't make up stuff. Tell them you will get the answer and get back to them. If God wants someone to convert, HE will do it not us. It is our job to inform.

Therese, you are a wonderful person. You cannot be held responsible for your friend. It was her choice to take her life. You did the best you possibly could, you showed her the light and she turned away. You should be commended for your efforts.

God bless you. You will be in my prayers. :crossrc:

Although protestant bibles are incomplete, I wouldn't say they are full of errors. There are some versions that have errors, but not all. The New Testament should be exactly the same as far as books and content.

Baptism, the first sacrament, the doorway into Christianity, salvation and all the other sacraments is being done away with. Already many see it as nothing more than an outward sign of your faith. Some are even believing that is unnecessary, it is just a 'symbol', something you do as part of tradition when you become a Christian.

.
Dont you receive the gift of tongues/prophecy when you're baptised into the name of Jesus? CC Acts 19 1:7. Then it cant be symbolic because of the power that comes with it? Act 1;8

I think the biggest issues regarding protestant bibles and the Catholic Church are in the commentaries, for there is where doctrine is taught and interpretation of scripture is presented . . . if it contradicts Catholic teaching, the Catholic Church is not going to approve it . . .

And that is perfectly understandable.
