G. Buchanan Gray, The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament in English, Charles, ed.1913 pp.631-652.

Psalms of Solomon 17:18-27, "They that loved the synagogues of the pious fled from them, as sparrows that fly from their nest. They wandered in deserts that their lives might be saved from harm, and precious in the eyes of them that lived abroad was any that escaped alive from them. Over the whole earth were they scattered by lawless men. For the heavens withheld the rain from dropping upon the earth, springs were stopped that sprang perennially out of the deeps, that ran down from lofty mountains for there was none among them that wrought righteousness and justice. From the chief of them to the least of them all were sinful; the king was a transgressor, and the judge disobedient, and the people sinful. Behold, O Lord, and raise up unto them their king, the son of David, at the time in the which Thou seest, O God, that he may reign over Israel Thy servant and gird him with strength, that he may shatter unrighteous rulers, and that he may purge Jerusalem from nations that trample her down to destruction. Wisely, righteously he shall thrust out sinners from the inheritance, He shall destroy the pride of the sinner as a potter's vessel with a rod of iron he shall break in pieces all their substance. He shall destroy the godless nations with the word of his mouth. At his rebuke nations shall flee before him, and he shall reprove sinners for the thoughts of their heart."

This passage is from the Psalms of Solomon, a book which was included in Bibles in ancient times. It was written before the time of Christ and evidences foreknowledge of prophetic events which would otherwise come to be revealed in the Gospels by Jesus and in the Book of Revelation by John.

When I see the mark of the prophetic, this is something which is indicative to me of the hand of God in the composition. Can you recognize all the similarities with truth which did not come to light otherwise until New Testament times?

When I see a religious 'source', such as the Koran or the Book of Mormon, written in 'King James' English I wonder if it needs assistance in the credibility stakes. Can't people translate into their own language?

For those of you interested in Septuagint studies and the Psalms of Solomon. The NETS is "A New Translation of the Septuagint" which contains readable and scholarly translations of the Greek O.T. It also contains a new translation of the Psalms of Solomon. I can hardly put the NETS O.T. down, its that good.

You can test drive the NETS before buying. You can download the PDFs for the NETS LXX into a folder on your hard drive and search them using Acrobat. You open Acrobat, use "search" and browse to the folder in which you downloaded the files. Acrobat will give you a document tree on the right which you can click into to go to the passages containing the word or phrase upon which you searched.

An interesting feature of the NETS edition of the Septuagint pictured below is it includes all the Books of the Greek O.T. which one finds in the RSV of 1977 and the NRSV; additionally, the NETS includes the "Psalms of Solomon". (Click on the book image below for more info.)

For those counting, in addition to English translations of the ancient Greek versions of the 39 books of the Jewish Bible, the NETS contains what some term the "expanded Apocrypha" which was also translated for the RSV of 1977 and the NRSV. These include:
  • 1 Esdras
  • 2 Esdras
  • Tobit
  • Judith
  • The Rest of Esther
  • Wisdom of Solomon
  • Wisdom of Jesus Son of Sirach
  • Baruch
  • Letter of Jeremiah
  • Prayer of Azariah
  • Susanna
  • Bel and the Dragon
  • Prayer of Manasseh
  • 1 Maccabees
  • 2 Maccabees
  • 3 Maccabees
  • 4 Maccabees
  • Psalm 151
To which the NETS adds:
  • Psalms of Solomon
