• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

On January 13, 1998, my 17 year-old son, Bryan disappeared after a school field trip to Los Angeles. Friends told us and police that he had been dropped off near his house. Subsequently, a police report was filed, and an investigation was launched, an investigation which did not produce any results.

A couple of weeks ago, five witnesses to Bryan's final moments on this earth came forward. Apparently, after the field trip, he and his friends had gone to someone's house, that of a boy not much older than Bryan. The boy called Bryan out into the backyard, and for reasons unknown, stabbed him in the neck with a hunting knife, killing him. Witnesses then state that the "boy" took two more knives and dismembered my son, dividing his earthly remains and placing them in three trash bags, which were then taken to a dumpster behind a supermarket.

The five witnesses decided to come forward at the present time due to the fact that this fellow, now in prison on another charge, was due to be released in December. Police told me that when they interviewed him in prison, they found that he had photos of dismembered animals on the walls of the cell, and that his body was covered with demonic tattoos. You see, this "boy" is a self-confessed satanist, and my child was slaughtered ritualistically to the boy's god, satan.

My question is how I can ever possibly forgive this individual? I've already forgiven the witnesses, but I'm having considerable difficulty in finding any degree of Cbristian charity for this fellow. Also, does anyone know of any good books or appropriate Bible verses which might assist me in my grieving process. I know that our God is a mighty God, but I'm still having problems.

Thank You,
DLT (Father of Bryan Cole Thorne - 02-15-80--01-13-98)

WOW, oh my goodness, i am so so sorry for your loss. That is the most horrible thing i have heard. Pray for God to help you forgive this man. All i can say is remember he will get what he deserves when he dies. That will be punishment enough.

John 16:33: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (my favorite verse, i cling to it always)

1 Peter 5:7 it says, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Romans 5:3-4 ~ ”And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.”

 DLT....

I'm so, so sorry for your loss....it's so painful and my heart felt badly for you.

God knows how your son went through the whole thing and He could feel exactly how you felt deep inside you. God witnessed the whole event and you should forgive this person and let God handle this person Himself. God knows what to do with this person and you just need to surrender this to Him.

May peace be with you....God bless.

I remember reading about this in the news. I am so sorry for your loss. I'm so relieved you were able to forgive the witnesses. Praise God!

I cannot believe the mountain you are facing right now. How to forgive the killer? The only way you can, is with God. And don't expect add water-instant forgiveness. That's difficult in ordinary situations. Yours is huge. You need to pray about it every day. God even goes so far as to tell us to bless and forgive our enemies. Jesus somehow forgave the people who killed him.

I have a list of Bible verses I arm myself with, because I have a situation that it is hard to fogive. When things get so bad, and I'm thinking about this person (who could have very well caused my father's death) night and day, and thinking of all of the evil things I want to say to her... I stop, and read these verses.

Romans 12:9
Romans 12:19-21, 8:6
Phillipians 4:6-9
James 1:2-8, 4:7-8
Proberbs 19:11, 12:16, 17:4
Colos. 3:13, 4:6
2 Corinth. 10:4-5
Ephisians 4:32
1 Thes 2:10-13
Psalms 51:4

I find new verses every day that apply to my situation and help me.

I'll keep you in my prayers. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss.

"And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life." Mark 10:29-30.

Return your son to God and he will bless you with a hundred fold. Your son was not yours to begin with but he belonged to God and was indeed even more precious to God then he was to you. Does God need you to fight for him? God's wrath is far more fierce then your anger.

Read in the bible what God's punishment will be for those who do evil. Unless he turns to Jesus, the boy who slaughtered your son will pay for his sin, not only in his lifetime, but for eternity in hell. The worst you can wish upon this boy will be the least of his sufferings.

Read Revelation Chapter 16 concerning the Bowls of God's Wrath.

Hope this helps. My heart goes out to you.

Here's another verse that might help.

"But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." Revelation 21:8

Our God is fair and just. He will make sure that those who do evil receive their full punishment. In fact, God was quite creative when he thought up how he would punish evildoers. As you read the book of Revelation, God will give you a picture in your mind of how things will play out in the end. It is far worse than any horror film I've seen. As you read you may even find yourself feeling compassionate for those who will receive punishment for their sins.

DLT,
I thought my circumstances where bad, this is worse than the death of my daughter who was strangled to death by a window blind inner cord.
One book that I recommend, but I don;t agree with all the doctrines is Safe in the Arms of God by MacAuthor. He has TONS of scriptures in there that has to do with the death of a child.
It has been some years for you in your road though grief. I am in my 3rd year of grief.
After my daughter passed away, my daughters classmate(6 years old) was kidnapped and killed here in Valley Park. The found her the same day. Ironically she was buried next to my daughter. So I eventually met the mother through the cemetary and we got together and shared alot. Her expierience minimized my pain in away. To me, this situation is the ultimate other than suicide.
There are ALOT of groups that I am sure you are aware of that have parents in them that you can relete to. I made my own group up in Yahoo for anyone who has ever lost a child due to a strangulation.
Gosh, to recive all of this in just a couple of weeks 6 years after losing your son has GOT to be a nightmare. I am sorry that you have to relive this pain in such a horrible way. As far as forgiving this man, you are going to have to ask GOD to give you the strength to do it. With out God, I really don't think it would be possible.
May the Lord comfort you my brother,
GEL

I am shocked, mortified and horrified to read vile act of sadism towards your son DTL. What you have described is unimagineable! What you are suffering is unimaginable!

You cannot forgive the creature. And Jesus does not expect you to do that which is impossible for humans.
The murderer must send for you and be filled with remorse before you can forgive. For Luke 17:3- 4 states ....

Take heed to yourselves; if your brother sins agains you, rebuke him; and IF HE REPENTS, forgive him.
And if he sins against you 7 times a day, and 7 times a day TURNS AGAIN TO YOU SAYING, I REPENT; forgive him."

To begin with, the murderer was NO BROTHER to you. He belongs to the dark. You belong to the light.
And, the only reason he'd ever be "sorry" is because he was caught!
This is evil in it's full form. You cannot - and will never forgive that murderer until he turns to Christ, sends for you and goes down on his face in front of you in sheer utter sorrow for what he did to your son, you, your wife, and your family and friends.
And, that goes for the witnesses too.
I simply cannot imagine your sufferings, but believe me, you and your family will be in my prayers.
Joyce Meyer put out a lovely little book to help with grieving. I forget the name of it, but I know it did help me.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. :prayer: I cannot imagine having to go through such a horrible event, but I pray that God gives you the strength you will need to heal from this as much as possible. The things some human beings are willing to do to other human beings makes me sick.

I want to share with you because I can relate to you and would like to add a thought that helped me.
I don't really want to go into details because enough has been said. We know what we are talking about.
The time came for me that I needed to forgive to go on. I had to live with the violent offender in my community after he was released from jail. Justice was not served because of a plea bargin that he made. When he was released he continued to terrorize me. After several years I finally approached him and told him I am going to forgive him because unforgivness was like a cancer for me. It held my life back from being all that I wanted to be. The power of forgivness was amazing for me. I was able to resume living without the dark shadow that was always over me.
Mind you that was not the end of it. When I found out about inappropriate behavior towards the children of a single mom I went and talked to her. She was a very simple women and was missing all the signs. So I told her what happened to me and she made a wise decision to ban the man from her home.As a result the word spread about what happened to me 13 yrs earlier. That man was shortly afterward surrounded and attacked by about 20 locals. He Ended on crutches for several weeks. Itold these people that no one came to talk to me they just beat him and perhaps created a new vendeta against me. I also bumped into him and though he was trying to run away(I mean hobble) I caught up to him. I told him I did not send anyone after him. This all came only as a result of his own actions. It was his unrepentance that brought it on. I just know that I did not want the bitterness that had a hold on me.Forgivness is a powerful thing. It didn't make what he did right and I still had to keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. I acted upon his inappropriate behavior to protect those defenseless children. I don't feel sorry for him but I do fogive him. There is a difference

You cannot fight evil with evil, only evil will win, you can only fight evil with love.

You can only overcome this evil that he did upon your son by letting your soul speak in all honesty, and stating that you forgive this individual, and that you feel compassion for the situation he is in ,which is being unconsious of Gods love. To do so, you may have to visit him in prison. Remember let love be the winner in your heart, ask God for help to muster all the love he can spare and make you able to forgive this individual.
