  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Profanity

Profanity is inappropriate because of the context and meaning - and the meanings tear other people down...and that's not what we should be about (Ephesians 4:29)

my roommate and I were talking abotu this the other day...and we were talking about how a lot of people try to stop swearing and what not, but just substitute other words that are more acceptable to society...but is that not just the same thing? I mean, when you swear, whether you use a four letter word or "tomato"...if it's the same context, then it's the same thing, no? So, I think we just need to work on our attitude and heart so we won't have to use even tomato in an awful context

I disagree that swear words have to tear other people down. In fact, a good amount of the time swear words are not directed at anybody--they're just used to convey a richer meaning. When I use swear words, I only use them in contexts in which they make sense and tend to help the meaning I'm trying to convey. Because of this, swear words shouldn't be used lightly and all the time since overusing a word will make the word lose the oomph that it had. There is no moral wrong with using swear words when they're not intended to hurt or degrade anybody, but if one's intention is to hurt and degrade any word usage would be wrong.

If you read the scripture that you point out in Ephesians it simply means that one should not curse (as in say bad things) about people.

Swear words as society has defined them you should watch in what company you use them in. If the company you use them in is alright with them then you may use them although I would seriously recommend against making a habit of it.

If the company you are in could potentially be offended by them, then do not use them.

Taking God's name in vain is always a sin no matter what company you are in.

Its trashy.

I can't imagine someone like Audrey Hepburn saying something was "blanking amazing!"

If a person feels the need to use 4 letter words constantly in conversation, I think it suggests a lack of vocabulary on their part.

I agree with both points.

I agree with this. Its the intent behind the word, and when its put that way, any word can be a swear word.

Taking God's name in vain is wrong in part because it cheapens it, makes it less real to us. Swearing at other people can be wrong, because it is wrong to hurt or degrade someone with or without cussing.

However, I don't think swearing in general is wrong, if you aren't trying to offend or verbally abuse anyone. It's just part of some people's lexicons. If you're talking about, for instance, fecal matter or a person's posterior region, it sounds awkward when you try to avoid the generally-accepted terms for those things.

I agree completely..some of that was my point..

sorry..I should have worded stuff differently, I wasn't meaning to say that swear words just tear people down..I was just talking about when swear words do so...

I think my vocabulary is quite adequete for most situations, if not every situation. I feel that the reason these words are used is more often due to the cultural significance or importance of the words. I live in a cultural where the mores encourage one to use obscenities, I'm a Marine, a Marine who doesn't swear is not as deeply involved in the cultural aspect of being a Marine. This all my personal opinion, and I also think that under most circumstances swear words are trashy, but you shouldn't insult random people's vocabularies unless you are incredibly certain of the superiority of your own.

I think using profanity is only wrong when it is used to insult or cut down another person.

for example:

saying "you are such an f'ing idiot" is sinful and unnecessary.

but if you say "man, that test was so f'ing hard" or "Man it is f'ing freezing here" I don't think there's anything wrong with it because you arent insulting anyone with it. Using the Lord's name is vain is always wrong though, and I try not to do it, yet I still slip sometimes.

(Note to mods: please dont delete this post, I was just trying to illustrate a point, I wasn't trying to insult anyone here.)

I think it says something when Marilyn Manson chooses not to use profanity in general conversation. Regardless of what you think of his music or his persona, that is one artichulate man.

Also: you'll notice it says "It suggests lack of vocabulary" in my quote. Not that dropping the f-bomb automatically equals "illiterate dingbat".

Words are just words. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. You know, all of that stuff. All that's needed to be said really has been said. Depending on what company you're in it may or may not be appropriate to curse. Personally when around friends I curse like a drunken sailor, but that doesn't mean I'm not a nice person to hang around. That also doesn't mean I lack vocabulary either. That's called slander.
