  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It does not bother me for the most part. Provided the Lord's name is not taken in vain.....

However, there are better ways to express oneself. Over-use of profanity tends to indicate someone who is not very mature in their speech.

What do you think of profanity? If Christian, whether 'tis okay to do so, or not, esp among the cf,

and if not, then do you think it is a sin?
But now you yourselves are to put off all these: wrath, anger, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

These verses sum it up for me.

"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." (Ephesians 4:29)
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth." (Col. 3:8)

We are to "shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness." (2 Tim 2:16)

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." (Ps 19:14)

Christian liberty issue. Don't do it near people who object, but apart from that, it's just words...
I not offended by it, so I won't object. In one sense they are just words, but more importantly is this.........everything a person says or does is a reflection of their character.

Yes. In my case, my character is a little rough around the edges, but friendly, and this seems to come through in my choice of language. Do I use profanities? Sometimes. To borrow from Mark Twain, "Under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer."

I suspect that the most common prayer in English, by far, is "Oh ****". And I'm sure God knows what we mean, and accepts it as it is meant.

I'm used to being around people whos "character is a little rough". Actually more than just a "little" rough, (I'm a prison guard).
I try to avoid using it entirely. Sometimes, it seems neccesary in order to communicate effectively with a knucklehead. But I've found that it is bad to lower yourself in such a way.

Yup. I would love to be able to talk to the writers and ask them what they meant. I know that there's a couple of examples in the NT where the Apostles say things that might be considered profanity.

But why are profane words profane? Some words that we consider profane started as terms to descrive female dogs and bundles of sticks. Heck, one of them even has its roots in the Bible, of all places. I don't think profanity in itself is improper, because, after all, they are just words, that have different meanings in different societies. I think if you use the words with malicious intent, then it becomes bad.
