  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My girlfriend and I had a conversation last night about the different ways we process faith.

She pretty much tunes out on theology and "deep think" approaches, and focuses on loving God, loving people, trying to understand what God wants, and doing it. She also does not have particularly extensive background in the Bible per se, though she is enjoying the Bible classes at our church.

I can often be a bit on the other extreme. I'm convinced that theology is stressed way too much, but it doesn't take much to get me talking about it. I often prefer to read the New Testament in Greek, and get excited about and spend time doing things that aren't easy to share.

I think we each trust in each other's faith, but I don't think we've gotten to the point that we feel we're on the same page with this in the same way we're on the page with other things. I don't think we're unequally yoked, I think we have a lot to learn from each other.

Have y'all faced similar kinds of differences in the way you express and experience faith? How did you deal with that?

Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly— mere infants in Christ.
I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.

My wife and I had a little trouble when we first met, because of some of our different theological views. We just talked it out.

Yes, our faith differences were once probably are hardest and largest differences.

He used to be extremely.. extreme. Bible thumper to the max. And though he's finally toned down (Thank you God! :p), he's still a type of person to take everything very literally and really wants to study the bible. Where as for me... eh, I love God, I try to love people and show them that love, and be a good person. That is all I need.

Right now it isn't a large deal, but in the future when we start going to church together it may become a bigger one.. but certainly never big enough to make us stop loving each other.

I wouldn't say we process "faith" differently, but our differences in that matter stem from the separation churches have.

He's Jehovah Witness, I'm non denominational. He was raised by hard core parents, he doesn't celebrate any holidays, and his family does not support his decision to be with me (because I'm of a different faith) and some have said they won't even attend our wedding. Meanwhile, my parents have always been very liberal and supportive no matter what, the focus is not on what you should do if your a Christian, or what you shouldn't do....it's about loving one another as Christ loves us.

So yes, these differences could be an issue, but we aren't really viewing them as one. The intense love we have for each other will over come all of it.

K9 trainer - You and your boyfriend are unequally yolked. Its not a seperation in your church its a completely different religion. His religion believes that you wont go to heaven because its full. Alot of arguments in relationships are because of being unequally yolked. I really hope you find the truth.

God be with you
