I'd like to see the law change so a person may be declared fit to own a firearm despite previous mental history. For example, if a person hasn't had mental crises in years since a hospitalization, I don't see why they should be prohibited from owning a firearm.
If memory serves, the form only blocks people with a previous mental history for a very narrow set of reasons. You might want to take a look at the form and its instructions to see who is allowed to purchase and who is not (have a look right here). There may be some local restrictions in your state, too.
Here in scenic Arkansas, we don't worry too much about local restrictions -- there aren't many, meaning people typically fill out Form 4473, get the instant background check and the process is done. For those of us with concealed carry permits, the process is even faster.
