  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Problem with Internet Explorer :(

Okay, here it is. Everytime I open a link in a 'New Window', itll come up as extremely small. When I do this, its opening the window at its 'standard' size, not fully minimized nor maximized. This is obvious b/c when I have it maximized and click the middle button, the 'Restore' button it again returns to its state of extreme smallness. At this size, all you can see is the title bar and the 3 sizing bars, all in about a 2 inch by 1/2 inch box or so.
Ive tried looking all through the options and even the registry and tried modifying some of the stuff inside the registry, but nothing has worked. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Thanks,
Devin

Greetings. I've had that happen too - it's a pain, especially if you're trying to view a large space. I've found that it happens when you open a new browser window (Ctrl-N) when the active window isn't maximized. I've usually resolved it by closing all but one window, maximize it and then press "Ctrl-N" a few times. That should resolve it.

You might also try dragging the corners of the extremely small window to make it a more usable size. Unless I'm mistaken, IE has this wierd way of remembering when a browser window is resized and sizing subsequent windows accordingly; popups that use resizing javascripts tend to reak havoc with this feature.

Close all IE windows but for one. Maximize it and then hit the close button. Windows saves windows position with the last window you close for IE so if it is a pop up then when you restart IE it will remember the size of your last window from your last session and open all your IE windows the same way (popup size).

I'm a Mozilla and Opera guy, myself.

Opera is the best. It's fast, it's user friendly, it has more features than the othe browsers and it never crashes. I even shelled out the $39.00 to register it, not to get rid of the small banner but because it is such a awesome browser.

If you're using more than one Internet Explorer window please do yourself a favor and download Mozilla (full featured) or Mozilla-Firebird (light and fast, browser only). Tabbed browsing is much faster and easier than multiple window browsing. www.mozilla.org

The following settings may work well for you: middle click opens link in new tab & open links in background

Oh, yeah, Mozilla is free.

I also use Mozilla Firebird and it by far the best browser I have used. Tabbed browsing and built in popup blocking, all for free. You can't beat it really.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird/

You can check it out there and you can even buy the Mozilla CD with it for $3.95 if you have a slow connection. Enjoy the world of tabbed browsing and not as much BS. :)

what exactly is so much faster about using tabs than using multiple windows?? it's not that hard. you just move your mouse to the bottom of the screen and click on the other window. wow! same result!!!!!

oh and i got this off the firebird website (or the firebird bit of the mozilla website, to be politically correct)
Mozilla Firebird has world beating support for W3C standards like CSS
i opened up my web forum, which has valid CSS tags (I checked on the W3C CSS validator thing and the only invalid CSS tags were the scrollbar colour changers which i added myself) and it didn't display stuff correctly. i will show you. what you see in the top part of the image is from IE. the bottom is from mozilla firebird. you'll notice that one of the table cells is blue. thats because the mouse is hovering over it. it shouldn't be doing that. but it is, in almost all the table cells there...

Hmmm I'm looking at my PHPBB forums and they look and function the exact same with Mozilla on Linux compared to IE on my XP. I'm not running firebird though. But I do know that certain web codes do not run the same on Mozi as it does with IE, if at all. I use them both though, as with many other things as well... well w/o add banners of course :p I think I have Mozi for Windows but I never run it with the adware junk and I'm not shelling out cash to get rid of it. I'm not that big into web browsers.

did you read my post? my comparisons??

as much as it may seem that way i'm not actually taking a gripe at MF...i just downloaded it and it looks like it will be a good browser when they release the full version....and having an inbuilt popup blocker with the option to not block popups from specific sites is great. But it still has bugs that need to be worked out.

so for now, give me my IE!

I've been using Mozilla Firebird for a few weeks now, and I've noticed that a lot of pages like Yahoo's email login and a few others have glitches compared to IE, but other sites (I'm thinking specifically about techbargains.com) load in seconds with Mozilla and take forever to load anything using IE. I've never been to this site with IE but I have a feeling it would take a while to load too.

But I never said IE was hard, or that you could not get the same result. Also, I do not browse with a mouse. Mozilla-firebird can be used entirely without a mouse.

However, with or without a mouse, I believe it is faster because your desktop is less cluttered. On average I have fifteen URLs open. I'd rather have my browser take up one window than fifteen. If I leave my browser, then wish to come back, how will I remember which of the fifteen windows I was looking at? Also as I remember IE places the new window on top, whereas I want the new site to load in the background. (I could be wrong on this.)

It seems to me you've defined 'display stuff correctly' as 'displays stuff like IE.' By your own admission your site is not W3C compliant. Indeed, you admit that the color changers are incorrect, then you're surprised that Mozilla displays the wrong colors. If your site does not display correctly in Mozilla I'd say that you need to tweak your site design. I am not a webdesigner, however, so I claim no authority here.

All this is a matter of taste. For me, tabbed browsing is a necessity.
