I got an upgrade notification from AMD this morning for the APU an A6-5200 with intergrated graphics card; an HD-4200 that's in my Laptop with 4GB ram.

As this was from AMD I figured it would be OK to D/L the latest drivers; so said yes and after a bit the new drivers were ready for install.

Before the graphics control was called "Catalyst Control Center" now it's just "Radeon settings"
and the chip set has been upgraded to: Radeon Adrenalin graphics chipset--AMD Radeon HD 8400. Which looks to be from AMD's game section.

After I got it back up and running; the mouse pointer is very jerky and disappears and then reappears every few inches; which makes high-lighting something to copy & paste; almost impossible. Also sometimes when typing the characters are slow to appear after hitting the key.

I've done some searching and found sites saying that the HP PC's with Catalyst Control Center; only should use Windows drivers and not the AMD ones.

As this seems to be a new thing for AMD; the gamers consule; as that what the new graphics control panel looks like; I have found no web-site help in going back to the older CCC and drivers.

I don't use this LT for games and just want it to work on posting to CF and D/L and watching videos; so could use some experienced help. Thanks.

Hi mnorian,

You might be able to get quick relief by going to Device Manager, double-clicking the graphics processor, and choosing "roll back driver". It may or may not work, and it may or may not give you CCC back.

Or you could go to the LT's manufacturer's site and download the latest driver they recommend. Uninstall the existing driver and reboot before installing the replacement driver.

Or delete the graphics driver and then let windows install the ones you had before. Delete anything from AMD you just d/l'd. You could also try system restore and find a date not too far from today.

Howdy Paul;
Windows still sees the older drivers; doesn't show then upgrad from today; and the roll-back is grayed out. Here's a screen shot:

That driver is a) MS provided, and b) dated 2009. Neither of these should be. Did the notice come through Windows Update?

IAC, as I suspected, there is no rollback available. I would download from HP and go through the second option I described. Fully uninstall and reboot before reinstalling.

You could also choose a restore point that was made just prior to your AMD update. Assuming Win10:
  1. Select the Start button, type "control panel" and then choose it from the list of results.
  2. Search Control Panel for Recovery.
  3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.
  4. Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.

The latest driver update from windows came in on 6/8/2018 and the graphics control panel from AMD also runs the video settings; and a whole lot more; that's why I'm leery about uninstalling before I know exactly what's the problem:

I would do that; St. Worm; if it wasn't for a few problems:
1--I've never had good luck using restore points.
2--I was using CD-R disc for back-up of my HD; but ran out of disc; I know it's:doh:
3--I have a bunch of apps and things I have D/L lately.
4--I have a feeling there is some easy solution; that may be starring me the face; before I life boats out.:D

If you uninstall, at worst windows will install a generic video driver, you will not loose all visual. AMD website might be your best bet, assuming you received an automated update from Microsoft. AMD should provide a graphics suite with software to update the integrated graphics. I would have better information except I use NVIDIA graphics cards. Cannot remember which type our old laptop used.

Excellent idea that slipped my mind.

If you use the HP-supplied drivers, you are taken back to factory condition, more or less. There's nothing to be afraid of, unless...

... you don't have your system backed up. You should have a two-tier system, especially if you do a lot of downloading. Take an image of the system periodically for a complete reinstall, and take frequent user data file backups. For the first I find Clonezilla the best; AOMEI is very convenient, but doesn't do factory restore partitions accurately. Their OneKey Recovery is a good workaround, though it will cost you a few dozen GB of the hard drive.

Optical drives are out for backups. Get an external hard drive or at least a quality USB stick. It's faster and cheaper, and you will be more willing to use it.

I would do the backups before anything else.

Thing is; this came from AMD; and I think they run there video graphics on top of Windows; there is a bunch of drivers for the Adrenalin control panel; this was meant for some high-end game machine and my puny 4GB ram in this Laptop is just not up to running with all the graphic acceleration it's using. It gets real wonky now if I have more then then a couple web pages open and 2 screen shots in my photo editor; it was about to crash; till I shut some things down.

Here is a Screen shot of all the software drivers AMD D/L with no path to windows. Ya I need to uninstall all this AMD junk and go back to the window's drivers and HP's Catalytic control control center:

Right now; for several reasons; getting a back-up drive/stick is not an option; wished it was.

Go in to the graphics panel, wherever that is for AMD but most likely in the bottom right tray somewhere and type the driver name in to Google and your symptoms to see if other users are suffering.

It shouldn't really have made that big of a difference.

Don't reinstall Windows though. That's a bit too drastic and biting off the nose to spite the face. There's more than likely a quick fix.

From what I understand, Windows 10 should run just fine with 4GB of ram. Microsoft created it to run on tablets, so I doubt the ram is the problem. What you might do is run a maintenance program like CCleaner to clean junk files and it is also superb at fixing Windows registry problems. I've used the program for many many years without issue, it's a popular tool widely used by masses of PC users. You have a nice integrated graphics chip, and sufficient ram, neither should slow you down in simply loading web pages so I am thinking the problem is elsewhere.

Also it sounds like something unrelated to graphic drivers. Cursor lag is symptomatic of heavy load on the CPU.

Hold Ctrl, Alt and press Delete and open the task manager, go to processes and see what the CPU usage is and if it's high, see what's causing it. It may be spiking as well which causes the skipping or lag of the cursor
