I am a Gideon and I try to be involved every time a prison/jail visit is set up. These are the folks that Christ can make an instant positive impact on, if they are sincere and give the Christian way a try. Also, behind bars is usually the only time these guys are clear headed enough to stop and listen to what you have to say about Christ.

BUT, like all ministries, we have to first show we care about the person before they will listen to us about the Savior.

I think prison ministries are great and happen to be one of the things Christ says is a way of showing our love for Him. One thing prison are definately lacking, is love. God bless to all who in faith, strive to bring Christs love to all those in prison.

a very worthwhile ministry - but tough to do well.
iv'e never done it.
I think it would require a really long-term commitment before you got the hang of it. but positive things could definitely come out of it.

Charles Colson used to have a prison ministry going, didn't he?

If you are interested in free materials for prisoners you can check out "Chapel Library" Mt. Zion Publications in Pensacola Florida. They work with over 2200 prisons.

I have applied to join a prison ministry team near where I live in Australia. I am waiting for all the application checks to be approved. They are pretty thorough with references and ID checks etc (which is a good thing i guess).

I will post some non-specific details from my experience once I have been a couple of times. I think it will be great because I am hoping they will have more time than the average person to ponder and consider eternal things.

Great to hear about this, my group did such ministry in East Timor and it changed the lives of dozens of people who thought their lives had little meaning. All the best to others doing similar prison ministries, it's a really special opportunity to help many people.

I am involved also, it is indeed a time many will accept straight talk, I've learned to be very direct, to the point, they usually know doing it their way is not working out.
Prison can be a very positive experience for many. I always tell them they can look back on their time with warm memories and thankfulness for their time spent there, it is up to them. He is there for them.
