There are a considerable number of people who like Prince better than Michael Jackson, and believe he was more talented and his lyrics were better and he was a better singer. Does anybody here feel the same way? It's hard to say. I feel that Prince's music in general lacked the intensity and energy that Michael Jackson's music had.
I think a lot of people just like to have a different opinion from the mainstream for the sake of it. I think it should have no bearing how famous or iconic the singer is, in whether or not you like them better.
An example to support my opinion would be that Liberace wasnt the best pianist or composer, but he was a very good entertainer and knew how to excite the crowd. In the same way, I don't think Prince had Jackson's talent as a performer. Michael Jackson had more charisma as a singer and preformer and better presentation style.
As for who was a better singer and had a better voice, that's tricky to even explain or come to a good conclusion on.
Many people I know would probably say Michael Jackson is a better singer than Robert Plant or Freddy Mercury (except for this guy and girl I know who both say both of those singers are way better than Michael Jakcson), for example, and most people like MJ better than Prince.
But that's because while they both believe they are good singers, most people hear a Michael Jackson song, with his singing voice and the melody and lyrics of the song, and hear a Prince song, with his singing voice and melody and lyrics, and like Jackson better.
Whether or not you view someone as a better singer is if you like the sound of their voice.
Take a boring song-make Freddy Mercury sing it, and make Michael Jackson sing it- and in my opinion, Robert Plant or Freddy Mercury would probably sound much better. It's hard to say, because both are very talented in their genres, but as others have said, MJ's voice itself certainly isnt the best.
Here's a good way of determining who is a better singer. Imagine two people singing the same song, and figuring out whose voice you enjoy more, or whose voice is better and more skilled from a technical standpoint. Here are videos of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra singing the same songs-and even from a technical standpoint, not even personal prefernece, Elvis is 100x better. His voice has more energy and power and substance. I'm sure there are technical reasons why it is better as well. Maybe I could be wrong about that. But the fact that I posted the same songs being sang by totally different voices
Another song example.
My personal belief is that Prince's voice isn't as (to quote what a user said in another thread) thin and shrill as Michael Jackson was in the later part of his career, but the problem is, many of his songs were slower and less exciting. Comparing singing voices is difficult because people sing differently in different years in their career. In the very early and very late part of his careers, Elvis's singing voice was mediocore (in the 50s and in the later part of the 70s). In the Thriller era, Michael Jackson's voice was very good and in his prime, but later on, I would argue his vocal ability waned.
Michael Jackson in his prime was a better singer than Prince.
I could very well be wrong on thing, since I havent heard many of Prince's songs, as theyre harder to find due to copyright.
