  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Would you please explain what Prevenient Grace is? I read a definition but I think I need to hear it in layman's terms!:) Not sure if I am dull-minded or have not had enough coffee this morning!

Thanks!

 I'm going to have to do a google on this one.

Prevenient grace is that grace which kept you before the Spirit regenerated you. I am sure you can lok back on times that God preserved you and blocked your way from going into such sin or even death that woulsd have ruined you. Wesley ( for the life of me I can't remember how to spell his name) expounded previent grace as that grace which comes to all men but can be rejected.

Thanks, but I don't understand exactly how that pertains to free agency/salvation.

CC&E

Soteriologically speaking, those who hold to prevenient grace believe that God grants the ability (grace) for the unregenerate to seek Him and then make a free-will choice whether or not to accept salvation. They believe this element of grace is given to ALL. I see it as quite the opposite of irresistible grace.

In Wesleyan terms, which is very much like the RCC concept of baptism being "initial grace", prevenient grace is the grace given to all that restores them to a morally neutral position, eliminating the stain of original sin where they are no longer in bondage to the sin nature, thus being able to understand and either accept or reject the Gospel through the agency of a free will.

Augustine employed the Biblical concept as was stated earlier, which is the grace that preserves and prepares the Elect to receive the Gospel prior to regeneration.

that's right , Wesley wanted to maintain God treats all men equally (a thing impossible to maintain) and that Grace can be resisted ....... so the invention of a level playing field where all men are equally loved and favoured by God is ONLY disturbed by man's response to this grace .......... a kind of Sower went out to sow and the seed landed in good ground because God had gone before and made sure all the ground was good to receive the Word ........ the difference being in mans responsiveness to this "grace" ......... of course it doesn't fit with The real Parable of The Sower :)

some think it has parallels with the Reormed doctrine of "Common Grace" and that is why some Reformed Church's have rejected "common grace " altogether!

I wanted to print out the article on Finney, as I sometimes have trouble reading so much on the computer screen and the printed word is easier on my eyes. My printer and my computer don't seem to be speaking to each other today so I haven't done that yet. When my son returns from his Hapkido class, I'll have him fix that!:D

Anyway, all that is to say that I think I need to read that portion of the article again so I can ask a better question of you all.

As a full blown pelagian heretic, yule find that Finney, like most heretics, invents his own definitions.

Something to keep in mind when reading Finney.

Maybe you have a neighbor throwing a switch that they don't know the function of, as in the Allstate commercial about life coming at you fast. ;)

That's what my husband said. Back when we first got the satellite dish, one of our neighbor's remotes was on same frequency so we would be watching something on TV and all of the sudden, the channels would start changing. That is how you know your houses are built too close and it is time to move out to the country.

What you need to do is contact Bob Larsen and have him exorcize the demons from that garage door.

Contact him here: http://www.boblarson.org/

I must warn you though, Bob Larsen does not come cheap, he has a certain lifestyle to maintain.;)

Prevenient Grace

Ephe
2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God:
2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good
works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in
them.
