  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Called to be saints."
--Romans 1:7

We are very apt to regard the apostolic saints as if they were "saints" in a more especial manner than the other children of God. All are "saints" whom God has called by His grace, and sanctified by His Spirit; but we are apt to look upon the apostles as extraordinary beings, scarcely subject to the same weaknesses and temptations as ourselves. Yet in so doing we are forgetful of this truth, that the nearer a man lives to God the more intensely has he to mourn over his own evil heart; and the more his Master honours him in His service, the more also doth the evil of the flesh vex and tease him day by day. The fact is, if we had seen the apostle Paul, we should have thought him remarkably like the rest of the chosen family: and if we had talked with him, we should have said, "We find that his experience and ours are much the same. He is more faithful, more holy, and more deeply taught than we are, but he has the selfsame trials to endure. Nay, in some respects he is more sorely tried than ourselves." Do not, then, look upon the ancient saints as being exempt either from infirmities or sins; and do not regard them with that mystic reverence which will almost make us idolators. Their holiness is attainable even by us. We are "called to be saints" by that same voice which constrained them to their high vocation. It is a Christian's duty to force his way into the inner circle of saintship; and if these saints were superior to us in their attainments, as they certainly were, let us follow them; let us emulate their ardour and holiness. We have the same light that they had, the same grace is accessible to us, and why should we rest satisfied until we have equalled them in heavenly character? They lived with Jesus, they lived for Jesus, therefore they grew like Jesus. Let us live by the same Spirit as they did, "looking unto Jesus," and our saintship will soon be apparent.

This devotional really touched me!! i think its Spurgeon's.

Sister Q:
I have a question about the quote, "that the nearer a man lives to God the more intensely has he to mourn over his own evil heart; and the more his Master honours him in His service, the more also doth the evil of the flesh vex and tease him day by day."

I know Spurgeon was a man of great faith, ten times better believer than I am. But, I hope he did not know the whole truth. I mean I hope the quoted passage is not the whole truth. If it is the whole truth, the closer one gets to God, the more mournful he becomes. Then, how can it be good news?

But now I come to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. (John 17:14)

Jesus wanted his disciples to have joy, his joy. If one becomes more mournful, where is this joy? Is this joy beyond Spurgeon's mourning? If so, how does one pass over Spurgeon's mourning and reach Jesus' joy?

Or is the joy interweaved with the mourning? One moment a believer is mournful, but the next moment he is joyful?

Sister Q:
Since you taught me on mourning, please teach me also on joyfulness, for I am looking for the promised joy, Jesus' joy.

Hi Brother Rupert,

It is true that man is fallible, including Spurgeion i believe. That is why man is man, and God is God, and infallible,

I believe tht the Mourning that Spurgeion is talking about is not eternal mourning, but its temporal in nature. Its temporal.
to mourn over his own evil heart;

it is the morning over a condition, evil heart, David says the Word of God is a lamp to our feet, at times, this lamp lights to what we are doing wrong. we do the very things that the Almighty does not want us to. & this brings sorrow to our heart. I believe Spurgeion is talking about the proximity that reveals God's holiness and exposes our own filth.

Where as the Joy that is being talked about in John 17:13 is eternal joy. I believe it is not conditional. reminds me of someone who said with Happiness we become happy coz something happened, but the joy that comes from the Almighty s the type of Joy that is sustainable.

Good Question there!!!
