Just because a preacher yells doesn't mean that they are filled with the Spirit.
Well duh.
And there's nothing to be nervous about. God doesn't give us a spirit of fear. The new spirit in Messiah isn't the part of us that gets nervous. It is our flesh. That flesh is what we are to be overcoming - which is why confrontational preaching that speaks the truth is good. It confronts the flesh so that one may overcome it.
Yes, it is sad that there are empowered Pentecostals who know how to yield to the anointing one minute, and then turn around and display a lack of fruit of the Spirit the next in their attitude towards others. The cussing part isn't the problem because the Scripture doesn't define cussing as four letter words - that is a tradition - cursing - as in casting a curse on another with your words, which can include four letter words, is what Scripture is against. Such as "I hope you f---in die you piece of sh-t." That is vile speech according to Scripture. But, "Man! I just stepped in sh-t" is not. It is one way, a common way, to describe that situation, and is not cursing anything or anyone. I avoid both so as not to be a stumbling block to anyone, since the tradition is so wide-spread and accepted.
So, when such preachers allow themselves to get in the flesh and start tongue lashing others, they are out of line. One mistake many Christians make is thinking a leader or preacher is perfect. I haven't met anyone that has fully overcome their flesh and never gets in the flesh anymore. People get in the flesh in different ways.
Do you have an addiction? Even to coffee, sugar, or anything else? That is getting in the flesh - regularly. Do you ever participate in and entertain gossip, slander, or back-biting of any sort? That is flesh and sinful. Do you ever let your emotions get out of control, whether in anger, sadness, etc? That is flesh. Do outward things get you nervous? Flesh. The list would be very long - but many things Christians do is flesh. Some just have hidden issues more and white-wash in public.
Empowerment of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit are by grace, and refinement is a separate work of the Spirit, to sanctify the believer. Sadly, some receive the gifts by faith, and operate in such by grace, to edify the Body one minute, and then when they are done with that, they go right over into the flesh and put people down wrongly, because they aren't very refined. They still have a whole lot of dross to have dealt with in the fire.
Another thing I can tell you from experience is, that when the anointing has been on my strongly, it effects my flesh. My flesh gets weary after a while under it, and certain anointing will even agitate my flesh. When I then go out of the manifestation of the Presence and the anointing, my flesh will even more so want to lead me into acting up and getting its desires. It is almost like the flesh says, "Okay, I went through all that for God, now it is my turn to do what I want." I can't respond to that, or it is sin. The flesh doesn't operate in faith but in doubt. It doesn't have true love, it is selfish. It just wants its way. I've learned to guard myself extra when I come out of a great time of the Spirit moving upon me to use me. And I remind my flesh, "You didn't do anything for God! I (new man in Messiah) am in charge here and I'll use you however I desire and however God wills!"
Some haven't even experienced the refining (sanctification) process enough to really be aware keenly of this separation between the old and new natures, both still being in the body, and being at war over who's going to reign at any given moment. I doubt highly a preacher that preaches and then cusses out the crew is aware of such - and that shows they haven't submitted regularly to the refining fire to remove the dross, and the cross they are to carry, to crucify the flesh. Sad. They should be better examples than that.
I've noticed that Satan will fight tooth and nail to try to keep leaders in the Body from receiving the FULL work of the Spirit. I've seen Baptist preachers with great fruit of the Spirit and had been much worked on by the Spirit to be refined, taking up their cross to follow Jesus. But they had little to no empowerment because they didn't receive the work of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. They could still attract thousands of members in their churches, because of natural charisma, good fruit people like, and messages that don't offend anyone but attract people in this ear tickling generation.
Then I've also seen people that when the anointing is manifesting, it is obvious they know about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and have empowerment, but then when not operating in that anointing, they show much less fruit of the Spirit than some Baptist preachers. Why? I can only think Satan has puffed them up somehow in pride so they don't think they need to work on the refinement part. That happens sometimes when someone becomes empowered - they can get puffed up in pride thinking that empowerment means God is already perfectly pleased with how they are, and they have no improvements to make. That isn't true. God gave the baptism by grace for those who would believe, but we still need refinement in the fire.
The greatest men of God such as Wigglesworth, have both. They live holy lives unto God with all fruit of the Spirit, and they are very much empowered, more so than any others. To be Christ-like, truly, you have to walk in the fruit and the power of the Spirit - both. He did both, not just one or the other.
I hope this helps someone,
David
