An Everlasting Love. Brothers and sisters, God wants to show us his love every day. It doesn’t matter if we are in the midst of some serious affliction or if everything is going well. He wants to pour out his love upon us. He wants to teach us how to persevere and endure the challenges of life. He wants his love to be the primary force that shapes our character. He wants his love to become a foundation for our lives so that we can live in hope and confidence, not in fear or resignation.

God has loved us from the very beginning of creation. He loved us through all of Israel’s ups and downs. He loved us enough to send Jesus to redeem us by the cross. He loved us enough to send the Holy Spirit to us at Pentecost. And he will continue to love us every day of our lives—until the end of time. (From Hope Does Not Disappoint in The Word Among Us magazine ) .

Official Prayer for the Canonization of Matt Talbot

Lord, in your servant, Matt Talbot you have given us a wonderful example of triumph over addiction, of devotion to duty, and of lifelong reverence of the Holy Sacrament. May his life of prayer and penance give us courage to take up our crosses and follow in the footsteps of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Father, if it be your will that your beloved servant should be glorified by your Church, make known by your heavenly favours the power he enjoys in your sight. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Asking Matt's Help in the Presence of the Lord

Gentle Matt, I turn to you in my present needs and ask for the help of your prayers.
Trusting in you, I am confident your charitable and understanding heart will make my petitions your own.
I believe that you are truly powerful in the presence of Divine Mercy. If it be for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
the honour of Mary, our Mother and Queen and the deepening of my relationship with them, show that your goodness towards me, in my daily struggles, equals your influence with the Holy Spirit, who is hidden and at home in my heart.
Friend of pity, friend of power, hear, oh hear me in this hour, gentle Matt, please pray for me .

Amazing Grace That Saved a Wretch Like Matt Talbot and Us .

Homily

by Fr. Tommy Lane

John Newton was an English sea captain. During a storm at sea he promised his life to God if he survived. The ship survived and he later studied for ministry and was ordained and became pastor of a small church near Olney, England. He became famous as a composer of hymns, and one of them you know well, Amazing Grace.

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
was blind, but now I see.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come.
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.’

We can identify with the second verse of John Newton’s hymn. We have all come through many dangers, toils and snares. We did not do it on our own, it is grace that has brought us safely as far as now and we trust that grace will lead us home. Like the disciples struggling against a heavy sea in the boat who were reassured by Jesus calming the storm we all need the reassurance and help of Jesus to calm the storms in our lives. Like Peter sinking, sometimes we need the Lord to stretch out his hand and save us.

When a trial comes we may be tempted to say, “God doesn’t care about me”, or to think other negative thoughts. But God is always faithful and never abandons us and doesn’t cause our suffering. When you think about it, an amount of suffering is caused by the cruelty and inhumanity of humans to humans. So much of the suffering could be avoided if everybody took the Gospel to heart. We could have heaven on earth. But since we don’t, and we have to face storms like the disciples in the boat, Jesus catching Peter by the hand is, I think, Jesus’ way of telling us that he is there for all people of all time to catch them by the hand and take them to safety. If you are struggling with a problem at this time can you imagine Jesus catching you by the hand and pulling you up to safety? See him before you and hear him saying to you, “Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid.” ( Fr Tommy Lane )

Many passages in the Bible give us encouragement when we are struggling. Obviously God intended that the writers to include these passages in the Bible to give us courage in our storms. There are so many beautiful passages but I can only give you a sample of a few now.

Do not be afraid, for I am with you;
stop being anxious and watchful, for I am your God.
I give you strength, I bring you help,
I uphold you with my victorious right hand. (Isa 41)

Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name, you are mine.
Should you pass through the sea, I will be with you;
or through rivers, they will not swallow you up.
Should you walk through fire, you will not be scorched
and the flames will not burn you (Isa 43)

Does a woman forget her baby at the breast,
or fail to cherish the son of her womb?
Yet even if these forget,
I will never forget you. (Isa 49)

With God on our side who can be against us? Nothing can come between us and the love of Christ, even if we are troubled or worried, or being persecuted, or lacking food or clothes, or being threatened or even attacked. These are the trials through which we triumph by the power of him who loved us (Rom 8:31-37)

None of the trials which have come upon you is more than a human being can stand. You can trust that God will not let you be put to the test beyond your strength, but with any trial will also provide a way out by enabling you to put up with it. (1 Cor 10:13)

We could also add Jesus’ words to Peter in today’s Gospel, “Man of little faith, why did you doubt?”

This is just a small selection of most beautiful texts. God certainly wants us to understand that he is with us in our storms. When a storm hits, take the hand of Jesus and let him lift you to safety.
( Fr Tommy Lane )

Native Americans support campaign for Matt Talbot

Independent Catholic News
October 2, 2000

A group of Native American Indians came to Dublin last week for a special Mass to support the beatification of Matt Talbot. Dallas Chief Eagle were among an international congregation who joined President Mary McAleese at a Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Dublin, to promote the cause of Talbot, who died in 1925. "The Pope has shown a particular interest in Matt Talbot and commended him to the bishops of Africa as a protector of those who suffer from any kind of addiction," a spokesman said. Talbot was officially declared 'Venerable' in 1973 - one of the first steps on the road to sainthood.

Since his death 75 years ago, a cult has grown around the world with hostels and rehab centres named after him in Poland, Australia and Scotland. There are five Talbot centres in Glasgow alone. Fr Morgan Costelloe, the vice-postulator of his cause, is going to Krakow in Poland later this year to open a new hospital for recovering alcoholics which is dedicated to his name. More than 50,000 people have joined the Matt Talbot retreat movement in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Christian witnesses encourage us to follow the Lord

By Bishop J. Peter Sartain
Catholic Explorer Column
Jan 20, 2007

Wedged inconspicuously into the corner of his workstation so that only he can see it, a small portrait of Matt Talbot reminds a good friend to take one day at a time and offer God the consistency he desires. The image was given him years ago by his sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous, a fellow Catholic who had found in Talbot a good role model and inspiration to maintain sobriety.

Matt Talbot was born in Dublin in 1856 into a life of poverty. By the age of 13, he was addicted to alcohol—hopelessly so, according to those who knew him. Desperate at age 28, he made a pledge of sobriety on his knees. With the help of a priest friend, with whom he began to meet weekly, he established and maintained a disciplined program of recovery and maintained sobriety for 40 years. Many have remarked that the regimen closely foreshadowed the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous developed years after his death .

Talbot’s healing took place through prayer, fasting and joy-filled service to others. He never escaped poverty, partly because he gave so much money away. His sister once said, “Matt had no time for money.” He preferred to remain in the background, silently but faithfully at Mass and private prayer, quietly tending to those in need. “It is consistency God wants,” he is often quoted as saying.

He worked in the timber yards of Dublin and developed a keen sense of his fellow workers’ struggle for justice. A union leader described him as “a beacon of light to Irish workers.” Matt Talbot died June 7, 1925, on the way to Mass. He was declared Venerable in 1973, and Pope John Paul II (who as a young man once wrote a paper about him) described Talbot as a model of hope for those with substance addictions.

My friend faced his own alcoholism as a young husband and father, increasingly aware that the disease was affecting his health and that of his family. He connected with A.A., began to work his program every day and has been sober for many years. Much of his free time is spent helping others remain sober as well. ( + J. Peter Sartain )

After a parish meeting a few months ago, one of my sisters was having small talk with her parish priest and a fellow parishioner. The subject arose of asking St. Anthony’s intercession when having lost something. My sister added, “In our family, when we lost something, we always asked Matt Talbot to help us find it.”

I can confirm her recollection. As clear as a bell, I can hear mom say, “Ask Matt Talbot to help you.” Talbot had become a patron of our dad almost 60 years ago, after he had joined A.A., and mom was always grateful for his intercession for all the needs of our family. The night of the parish meeting a few months ago, my sister learned something new about Talbot’s dealings through and beyond our family. ( + J. Peter Sartain )

After she told her friends about asking Talbot’s intercession, her fellow parishioner added, “I know. It was your dad who introduced us to Matt Talbot.” Her deceased husband was also in A.A., and soon after he started working the program, some nuns had given him a small portrait of Talbot. “Your dad had given it to the nuns,” she said, adding, “When my husband started sponsoring John Smith in A.A., he gave the picture to him, and he still has it.”

My sister sent me an e-mail that night telling me about her encounter, because she knows that John Smith and I are good friends; I forwarded the e-mail to him. He was amazed to learn that the picture of Matt Talbot wedged into an inconspicuous corner of his office originally belonged to my dad.

But in another sense, he was not amazed at all.

As a Catholic who prays daily and actively lives his faith, as a recovering alcoholic who daily places his sobriety in God’s hands, and as one who has experienced first-hand the communion that is ours with Christian witnesses living and dead, he saw what I told him as another reason to keep moving forward, keep trusting in God’s grace, keep encouraging others, and keep being aware of the “cloud of witnesses” to which the Letter to the Hebrews refers—our sisters and brothers who urge us and encourage us to follow the Lord . What strikes me about Matt Talbot and the reason the church is considering his cause for sainthood is this: he is a model of Christian life and holiness not because things came easy for him, but precisely because in poverty, addiction, desperation and utter helplessness he gave himself entirely to God; not because he achieved something great, but because he allowed God to achieve something great in him. He could have given up, but instead he gave himself to God. In other words, he is a striking example of what I wrote about last week—that God wants what is best for us and asks that we cooperate with his grace, with what he is lovingly doing for us and in us. The struggle to do so—to let go and let God—can be mighty indeed.

Of the many prayer requests I receive, a significant percentage are for those who suffer addictions of various kinds. Perhaps they fear that somehow they are unworthy of God’s attention, that they have squandered their chance to receive his grace and healing. Matt Talbot’s example and prayers say otherwise and remind us that every human struggle can be the path to holiness and heroic Christian witness if we hand ourselves over to God. ( + J. Peter Sartain )

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart” (Hebrews 12:1-3)

Matt Talbot and the 1913 Dublin Lockout

This year marks the centenary of the 1913 Dublin Lockout. In the early autumn of that year, the heartless lords of industry locked out some 20,000 poorly paid Dublin workers, most of them with large hungry families. The reason for all of this was the spirited refusal of the workers to sever their connection with Jim Larkin’s founded Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union. The average weekly wage was five shillings (less that 90 cent in today’s Euro), working in excess of 80 hours per week .

Matt Talbot and the 1913 Dublin Lockout

Matt Talbot, as a poorly paid worker himself, admired and respected Jim Larkin and he became a member of the ITGWU, a link only severed by his death. Matt spent most of his time during the Lockout praying in Gardiner Street Church.

The final days of 1913 witnessed a rapid decline in the workers’ fortunes. Food supplies had dwindled disastrously and funds for fresh supplies were non-existent. During January and early February 1914, the men gradually returned to their work. As broken as they were with little or no improvement in their wages, they had yet gained a political victory. The employers, despite their best efforts, had failed to break Jim Larkin’s Union. In the ensuing years, the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union went from strength to strength. Matt was a fully paid up member of the ITGWU for the rest of his life. In 1923, Matt became very ill and was unable to work. He received sick pay, fifteen shillings from the Union.

AS OTHERS SAW HIM

His Prayerfulness

He "sought through prayer and meditation to improve his conscious contact with God" (11th step of AA programme). He converted his incessant craving for drink into a drive for closer union with God - a one-day-at-a-time approach which lasted forty years.

His Perseverance

"It is consistency that God seeks", Matt Talbot said. He carried out faithfully each day the spiritual programme given to him and visited a priest friend every Saturday for direction - a help to addicts who are advised to attend regular meetings and have a sponsor.

Total Giving

He gave himself totally to his new way of life. Once a self-centred alcoholic, he showed outstanding kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness to his family, his neighburs and to his fellow workers.

Sense of Justice

He was keenly aware of the unjust treatment of workers in his day. He refused to return to work after a strike in 1900 and sought another job. "He was very strong in the rights of labouring men", according to Ted Fuller, a workmate "and said they should stand up for themselves." He shared his small wages with his poor neighbours and even contributed to an orphanage in New York.

This stained glass surrounding one exit at The Shrine of the Penitent, St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Kentwood, Michigan, represents Venerable Matt Talbot, as a drunkard (on the left) and after conversion and recovery (on the right). The overall architectural design of the Shrine and church focuses on a place where sinners and penitents, might find refuge, comfort, and forgiveness.
