Anyone else do this program? Our little study group is on day three... liking it so far, great way to disipline oneself to effective prayer and devotional study.

Prayer 90X

I highly recommend it... here's a lengthy review to check out.

The P90x craze takes a spiritual turn with Prayer 90x! Prayer 90x by Pastor Ivor Myers is going to help you in your bible analyse and prayer devotionals. Have you ever wanted to reflect on what you need from the Word of God? How about have you ever walked away from your devotions not sure what you just read or even better are you not quite sure on how to communicate with God?
Without further ado here is my review on Prayer 90x a prayer journal and book by Pastor Ivor Myers. From the Preface on Pastor Ivor Myers sets the tone for what Prayer 90x will give you as individual looking to change his or her spirituality.
"This book is a new kind of devotional. It will lead you step by step through the hour of worship. This Prayer Workout will help you to stretch, that it, to expand your mind and heart to receive ever expanding truths in the word of God. It will build spiritual muscle so that you can manage the heavy truths in God's word. It will burn the fat of sin from you so that you will no longer be weighted down with a multitude of bad habits and attitudes. IT WILL HELP TO ELIMINATE YOUR WEAKNESSES. And most importantly, it will leave you drenched in the spirit of God." (From Prayer 90x by Pastor Ivor Myers)
If P90x Got you sweating like never before Pastor Ivor Myers suggests Prayer 90x will get you sweating and drenched in the Spirit of God. I for one don't like when people make big claims and fail to back it up but I for one take this prayer devotional serious in this regard. Many prayer journals boast and getting to see the results in Prayer 90x is what is so amazing. Personally I am tired of the self help mantra of you can modify yourself when its clear from the bible you can do nothing apart from Jesus (John 15:5). Pastor Ivor Myers brings to your attention what it is to have a broken spirit and a contrite heart. Here is what a good devotional should be teaching you and I. Here is a little excerp from Day one:
"Focus: Lay all your burdens at the foot of the cross of Christ, emptying your mind of distractions, problems, issues so that you can direct your entire mental focus upon the word of God and the presence of God. Focus on the following verse word by word. Commit it to memory."(Prayer 90x More Info)
This is a call for us to come to the Cross we who are heavy laden and burdened, I believe what Ivor Myers is creating with this 90 day devotional is to achieve what Steps to Christ was trying to Achieve but in a more intimate fashion for today's bible student. The power of prayer is revealed in this book and broken down into 4 major sections.
Warm ups: This is where you are going to set your self up for some nice quite time with God and open yourself up for communion with the Holy Spirit.
Strength and Endurance Training: Here is where the bible comes alive for you as you study and pray for God to reveal his will to you and get a deeper understanding of what the verses are trying to speak to you.
Cardio and Fat Burner: This section allows you to unload your sins at the foot of the cross asking God as David did "Psalms 139:23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:" This will allow you to have God work out and help you overcome any problems that you may be having in your life whether it be lust, lying, hatred, or anything you are holding onto God is not to small or powerless to deliver you if he gave sight to the blind and caused the Lame to Leep God and give you the healing you need spiritually right here burning the fat of sin right from your character!
Rest: Allow yourself to really rest in the bosom of the Master and Creator is something that Jesus so desires to put in your mind. Lots of things are said about Jesus but one thing that has to be pointed out here is that Jesus came to bring you grace and peace and I do not know about you but that is good news to me!
Within these major sections are subsections in Prayer 90x, and as you noticed earlier in the review "Focus" was one of the sections we mentioned. Pastor Ivor Myers Mentions the subsections as follows:
Focus: This time is spent emptying your mind of all other thoughts and focusing it upon the word and Presence of God. You want to break through as it were an invisible vail into the very presence, chamber room of God. For this reason you should be in a very quiet place.
Stretching: During this time, you are asking God to expand your capacity to receive the precious gems of his word.
Praise: Take this time to praise and thank God for all that He has done or is doing in your life.
Confession: Take this time to confess known sins in your life.
Petitions: Use this time to bring your prayer Petitions and intercession before the Lord.
Silence: During this time you should be training you ear to listen for the promptings of the Holy Spirit through the Word. What does the Spirit want to say to you in light of your worship?
Prayer 90x was written for the lay person and the scholar to get you spiritual fit. Prayer 90x is teaching people to have effective prayer and unvails the power of prayer for all who believe. Like I said there are a lot of prayer books out there and you can feel free to choose your own but for the price and the content this book completes it for me.
So here is to your spiritual journey hope your walk with God continues on the path you are seeking.

We have been studying from this book at Wednesday night Bible study. I highly, highly recommend it.

EG Waggoner's book on righteousness by faith is also a good read. I know it was a novel concept in 1888 for the church and I wonder if it is again a lost concept to God's people...

What I like about the 95 Theses book is that each chapter is a short read on one topic, maybe a page and a half each, which makes it nice for Bible a study or devotionals. The writter of the book makes some statments that are very eye opening and life changing. One statment, which I thought was awesome was, " There is no peace in victory, only victory in peace".

Daniel 12 tells us in the end those whom God unseals the book of Daniel to would understand and teach the righteous by faith message. We see in Rev 10 after the bitter disappointment, the remnant was told in chapter 11 to measure the temple. How could it have been a novel concept in 1888? Even Ellen White said she had been writing to them for 40 years.

There is something more to the 1888 controversy I can't quite put my finger on. Ellen White said the two (AT Jones and EJ Waggonner) both had the spirit of God. Yet in the ensuing years, they both went under the mind controlling mystercism of Dr. Kellogg. Ellen White also wrote the Lord was ready in 1888, but not 1 in 20 was ready. I wonder if God allowed the two to polarize the Adventists: reminding one what the God had been revealing to them since 1844, while allowing the majority to be pushed ever closer to edge of the left.

Can I trouble you to send the main instructions of the prayer90X? My ears felt tinkling reading the words in this review: prayer journal, experience the presence, focus... I could be wrong but this prayer90x sounds very much like spiritual formation.

I was wary of this as well but Ivor Myers states in the introduction that this is not what this is....

Today there are many philosophies of prayer and meditation penetrating Christianity, that are not based upon solid Biblical principles. Practices such as contemplative prayer, repeating a word or key phrase over and over, emptying the mind without filling it with the Word of God, vidualization, the teaching that we should visualize what we want to come to pass and then certain energies will bring it into reality, the stress of posture of body while praying, and more have been weaved into Christianity more and more frequently. Prayer 90x helps you to focus your mind on the Word of God, to memorize the Word of God, communicate with the God of the Bible all while avoiding these popular and unbiblical techniques.

Rarely any of them will come out and say this is pagan and this is occult practice. But you know what they say, if it looks like a pig, smell like a pig, walks like a pig, the chances are it is a pig.

ECR,

Almost all new Adventist pastors who come out of Adventist seminaries since the 90s are trained on spiritual formation. When this movement started back in the early 90s, the instructors in Adventist schools/colleges were predomimently educated in Roman Catholic institutions.

Having met Ivor Meyer in person about 2 months ago in his seminar, I can tell you he doesn't believe in Adventist teachings in the sanctuary and prophecy. So the claim P90X helps you study the Word can't be true. But he was powerfully persuasive. The entire congregation was so caught up that they gasped at almost every word he spoke. It was certainly a strange atmosphere.

The Omega is very deceptive and subtle. The Devil can and has deceived by quoting plain scriptures.

The bible never gave instruction on how to pray. That's personal. Imagine we need instruction on what to say to our spouse during intimacy!

The Devil was able to seduce Eve when he got her to reason with him. In my opinion, these words/phrases: prayer journal, silence, experience the presence of God, praying while focusing on a word/scripture, are too alarming.

I would stop and keep the book away until there are some answers/understands on this.

Thanx for your concerns, I know you genuinely care about my spiritual well being. I can tell you that irregardless of what the reviewer said, there has been nothing in the program that has even remotely caught my attention... and I am studying with two former Catholics that would probably be able to smell the pig before me...:)

Basically, it is a devotional that gets you to focus on a particular scripture of promise and how we can relate it to our lives. Tonights lesson was on asking God to search our hearts for any hidden sin and to think upon the dangers of the rebellion in Heaven and what that rebellion cost. There is also a memorizing of a passage of scripture everyday... when was the last time you heard of God's people memorizing scripture??

Having you point out these things about Ivor Meyers will keep me on my spiritual toes... thanx brother.

“Satan often finds a powerful agency for evil in the power which one mind is capable of exerting on another human mind. This influence is so seductive that the person who is being molded by it is often unconscious of its power. God has bidden me speak, warning against this evil, that His servants may not come under the deceptive power of Satan. The enemy is a master worker and if God’s people are not constantly led by the spirit of God, they will be ensnared and taken. For thousands of years, Satan has been experimenting upon the properties of the human mind. And he has learned to know it well by his subtle workings in the last days; he is linking the human mind with his own, imbuing it with his thoughts, and he is doing this work in so deceptive a manner that those who accept his guidance know not that they are being led by him at his will. The great deceiver hopes to confuse the minds of men and women that none but his voice will be heard.“---Adventist Apocalypse, p228

No problems. You can't be too careful. Probably the Lord was preparing you with the Omega Rebellion book. Keep your eyes open and antennas up. God bless!

I found this thread looking for a reference to the list of Bible Verses in the memorization aspect of Prayer90X. I am on Day #22 this morning.

In the interest of dispelling what could be the start of a bad rumor, I respectfully challenge you to evidence your claim. I have heard Ivor Myers preach for several years now and have met him in person on several occasions - I have heard nothing contrary to Adventist doctrine and, instead, have heard much that he has presented in solid support of our firm foundation. Can you offer evidence to the contrary?

The bible never gave instruction on how to pray. That's personal. Imagine we need instruction on what to say to our spouse during intimacy!

The Bible teaches us to praise God for who He is. It teaches us to thank Him for what He has done for us. It teaches us to pray for others. Christ outlined principles of prayer in The Lord's Prayer.

In Prayer90X, Ivor encourages the reader to go "deeper" into a text, searching for precious truths, and praying that God would teach you what He would have you learn. Each day has a "Cardio" portion where the focus is on burning the fat of sin from your life and he challenges the reader to ask God how the day's topic applies to the life.

There is no error or danger in such an introspection.

The Devil was able to seduce Eve when he got her to reason with him. In my opinion, these words/phrases: prayer journal, silence, experience the presence of God, praying while focusing on a word/scripture, are too alarming.

The Devil is indeed cunning deceiver. How is it that we allow him to lay claim to words? Meditation as a thought in our society has been stolen by the New Age movement. When the Psalmist wrote about meditating on the law of God day and night, he wasn't writing about meditating as it is commonly understood now.

Ellen White writes:

"It would be well for us to spend a thoughtful hour each day in contemplation of the life of Christ. We should take it point by point, and let the imagination grasp each scene, especially the closing ones. As we thus dwell upon His great sacrifice for us, our confidence in Him will be more constant, our love will be quickened, and we shall be more deeply imbued with His spirit. If we would be saved at last, we must learn the lesson of penitence and humiliation at the foot of the cross."
The Desire of Ages, Chapter 8.

As a people, we don't think deeply enough. Ellen White encourages us here, and in many other places, to think deeper, to use our imagination to focus on God's Word. For every counterfeit there is a genuine - rather than use our minds the Devil would have us loan them to Hollywood so he can do our imagining for us.

Prayer90X is an encouragement to think more deeply, to go beyond surface reading.

I've heard his testimony and his preaching on music and entertainment. I really enjoyed them.

When he started on the Adventist doctrine particular on the sanctuary with which the diagram he provided, it represented a popular deception. In his diagram, the sanctuary was placed north-south ward instead east-west ward and the furnishings were wrongly placed to be manipulated to form a cross which opposes what the true sanctuary message teaches.

I know most of SDAs are not familiar with our sanctuary message because it's 1.) no longer taught, 2.) been perverted. There is a 50 week sanctuary study here. And I have our pioneers' books on the sanctuary for anyone who's interested in additional reference. Study and show thyself approved and see why our sanctuary message is at the center of the Satanic attacks.

But what alarmed me is that Pr. Myers sold this popular error to the whole congregation. He had the audience on a string to react exactly the way he would want them to...to gasp in amazement at the things he said.

Before I became a SDA, I was into the PMA, psychocybernetics, new age thinking. I picked up on it, the atmosphere, the spirit of the place.

All of our pastors I would say since mid-90s have been trained in spiritual formation. This is a required study in all of our seminaries, colleges and universities. You can look it up on Andrew's online curriculum. One of the classes for the pastoral students is pastoral formation. It teaches the pastors to get the message across-ed to the audience through neuro- linguistic programming(NLP) bypassing the frontal lobe. Simply put, these are the arts of putting people under trance of various degrees.

The Bible teaches us to praise God for who He is. It teaches us to thank Him for what He has done for us. It teaches us to pray for others. Christ outlined principles of prayer in The Lord's Prayer.
The bible by divine wisdom gives no definitive way of praying. When Jesus was asked, he gave a simplistic example of praying. Praying is supposed to be spontaneous, often short and with whatever it's on your mind at the moment.

Eve had a memorized/mind-controlled by Satan. Did Eve know she was in danger?

Look up the definition of centering-prayer or contemplative prayer. What you described fits to a tee.

For every counterfeit there is a genuine - rather than use our minds the Devil would have us loan them to Hollywood so he can do our imagining for us.

Prayer90X is an encouragement to think more deeply, to go beyond surface reading.
We can not and are incapable to THINK deeply of things of God unless God already reveals them to us first. By emptying the mind of other thoughts, contemplating, centering on a particular text, or imagining meeting the presence of God...all these described in his book are tell-tell signs of mysticism. God made each one of us the guardian of our own conscience. No one should tell us what and how to use our imagination. Even the name, borrowing from P90X, a 90 day exercise program that incorporates Yoga to use the meditation/imagination to take over for the body. That's what participants are saying: the program does it for them when their bodies don't want to do it.

I have studied the esoteric. The experience I had in his meeting and what's described of his book sound so esoteric.

The deadliest deception in the last days is what Ellen White called the Omega apostasy. It's the captivity of one's imagination through esoteric/mystical practices: meditation and/or praying while focusing on a text/thought, using imagination for a spiritual experience, mental and physical mantra... all under the garb of Christianity.

"The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola are a month-long program of meditations, prayers, considerations, and contemplative practices that help Catholic faith become more fully alive in the everyday life of contemporary people. It is set out in a brief manual or handbook: sparse, taciturn, and practical. It presents a formulation of Ignatius' spirituality in a series of prayer exercises, thought experiments, and examinations of consciousness—designed to help a retreatant (usually with the aid of a spiritual director) to experience a deeper conversion into life with God in Christ, to allow our personal stories to be interpreted by being subsumed in a Story of God. The Ignatian method of prayer uses visual imagination to draw nearer to God.” - -- Spiritual Exercises

“Be not deceived; many will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. We have now before us the alpha of this danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature.” {1SM 197.4}

Adam knew the danger presented at the tree and warned Eve. But Eve strayed and was under the trance of Satan. I'm just giving out warnings when I saw the danger.

Sorry, OntheDL, but half of what you are saying this course is about is not factual. I do understand your concerns as you have intimate knowledge of spiritualism, and I agree that Adventism has been inundated with spiritualism in the last 20-30 years.

We are on day 73 and there is nothing more to this course than, as brother Jonathan has stated, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal a deeper understanding of various aspects of the Bible story. What has been a true blessing to our small group of three, is that we each have been blessed with a different perspectives of the subject at hand. My wife, being the 'newest' believer among us, is being led to a deeper understanding of her need of Christ and how these examples in the Bible are convicting her of shedding sin from her life. My understanding has come in the form of how the examples given relate to us at this time in earths history and what lessons are for us to learn. Our friend has been shown the more literal view and has given wonderful SOP from our study Bibles to enhance our understanding.

Nowhere in the book has it tried to bring us to 'meeting the presence of God' or to empty our minds and only think upon or meditate on a single verse... only to memorize scripture and think upon the Word after prayerfully petitioning the Holy Spirit to reveal deeper truths to us.

Yes, there is a sanctuary message to this study, in seeing the destruction of the symbols by the Papacy and the restoration of them through the reformers. The idea of the sanctuary picture resembling the cross is not exclusive to Pr. Myers... it is included in the research section of our Study Bibles as well. Can you tell us how you understand the layout of the furniture of the sanctuary? What difference does the polar orientation have to do with how the furniture layout can resemble the cross? And why is that a bad exegesis?

Sorry, OntheDL, but half of what you are saying this course is about is not factual.

Nowhere in the book has it tried to bring us to 'meeting the presence of God' or to empty our minds and only think upon or meditate on a single verse... only to memorize scripture and think upon the Word after prayerfully petitioning the Holy Spirit to reveal deeper truths to us.
From the Prayer90X book:

Focus: This time is spent emptying your mind of all other thoughts and focusing it upon the word and Presence of God. You want to break through as it were an invisible vail into the very presence, chamber room of God. For this reason you should be in a very quiet place.

Silence: During this time you should be training you ear to listen for the promptings of the Holy Spirit through the Word. What does the Spirit want to say to you in light of your worship?

These two above techniques are typical techniques of self-hypnosis originated from the eastern mysticism.

Here is my question: why would someone knowingly place himself dangerously close to the edge of temptation? Why would anyone take that kind of chance? The bible tells us exactly what to do for justification and sanctification. The SDAs are privileged to have the sanctuary message that vividly illustrates this. They have the SOP testimonies. The SDAs have all these truths at their disposal.

On the other hand...

Satan invents unnumbered schemes to occupy our minds, that they may not dwell upon the very work with which we ought to be best acquainted. The archdeceiver hates the great truths that bring to view an atoning sacrifice and an all-powerful mediator. He knows that with him everything depends on his diverting minds from Jesus and His truth. {CCh 348.3}

Since the very beginning with Dr. Kellogg, Satan has invented new theologies, new techniques to lure people into spiritualism. His effort has intensified in the last 2-3 decades. SDAs have gems in their hands that they haven't explored and become familiar with, why do we need to explore and entertain the new ways, new techniques that are questionable at best?

Yes, there is a sanctuary message to this study, in seeing the destruction of the symbols by the Papacy and the restoration of them through the reformers. I know this type of presentation of the sanctuary is not unique to Ivor Myers. I've seen it in evangelistic seminars, books, powerpoints...all over the place.

There is a reason Satan hates the sanctuary message the most. Because it gives one the knowledge to discern truth from error. The sanctuary is the definitely blue print of the plan of salvation. No one can arbitrarily interpret things. It would not fit the picture. The sanctuary is the foundation of all our doctrines.

Here is the depiction of the sanctuary according to the biblical description.

sanctuary.jpg

How does it resemble a cross? Not at all. Compare it to Ivor Myers' picture.
Ivor%20Myers%20-%20Sanctuary1.001.jpg

Now apply Ezekiel 8:16 to the first picture then to his picture. See the difference? A picture worth a thousand words.

In the second picture, the orientation, the dimensions and proportions of court, holy place, most holy place, the position of the laver, of the table of shewbread, of the golden alter and of the ark of covenant are all incorrect (so are the subsequent interpretations). There is a reason the bible gives the detailed description of these. "...in his temple does every whit speak of his glory."

These errors destroy our righteousness by faith message built on the foundation of the sanctuary.

However I'm not here to criticize someone or to tear down his work. I only answer with what I know when asked. There is a study here on the sanctuary a few threads down. Why don't you see what the sanctuary teaches for yourself? I guarantee you will find a world of difference between the modern popular theology and our historic Adventism.

I think you over analyzed the cross reference to the sanctuary layout. it was, to me, an analogy that identifies each piece of furniture to Christ's ministry. The alter of sacrifice to His death, the laver to baptism, the candlestick to Christ being th light of the world, the shewbread to Christ being the bread of life, the alter of incense representing His work as mediator for our prayers, and the ark of the covenant, His priestly work in the Most Holy.

I mean the only thing out of alignment was the laver but again it was an illustration not an exact representation.
