  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I need someone to post links and statistics here, however I want to ask people to pray for the hungry throughout the world.

I once heard somewhere that every 20 seconds, a child dies of hunger somewhere in the world.

What you can do:

Pray, post relevant information to keep this issue a priority, give to help the hungry next time you have an opportunity.

Oh GOOD Post Susan! Thanks for pointing out that although we do need to pray, AFTER that we need to get off our lazy spiritual rear ends and go feed the hungry.

Jesus set the example. Of course He never prayed for the Hungry. He FED them. And He has told us in many places to pray and then ACT.

But like always, we modern day Christians have a better idea. We will just pray and leave the work to someone else. Well we are only fooling ourselves when we do that.

Jesus was clear and plain. He said when you do to the least of these, you do it to me! I am sure every professing Christian in these Forums would say if Jesus knocked on their door and was hungry they would invite Him in and feed Him, and RIGHTLY SO. But when a bum comes to the door he is dispatched on his way as hungry as when he came with the threat of sending the police after him. What hypocrites we are!

Yes I will join you in your prayer and I will do more. I will feed those I can feed.

Thank You, Father, for giving to us the opportunity to not only pray but to act on behalf of the hungry, and judge us, if we do not.

Thanks for the reminder Susan. Something that has bothered me for years is that politicians in the US have these fund raising dinners where they charge outrageous amounts for the dinner. I have heard of charging $5,000 for a plate of food! I think it is very sad comment on our country when people hand out that kind of money for a politician and we still have people dying everyday because they have no food. In my mind, there is no excuse for this. Why not take money spent on those dinners and give it to an agency that can really make a change in someone's life by providing the hungry with life saving food instead of lining a politicians pockets?

/me steps off her soapbox now.

Statistics for California alone:

Number of children in poverty: 1,798,000

Child poverty rate (%): 20

State rank ('1' equals highest percentage): 6

Those are poverty rates/numbers/percentages, but hunger and poverty go "hand-in-hand"
Statistics are as of 2000 and are to be found here: http://www.hungerfreeamerica.com/facts/statistics/index.cfm

Poverty is the main cause of hunger. Poor people often lack access to land to grow food or inadequate income to buy food. Nearly one in four people, 1.3 billion - a majority of humanity - live on less than $1 per day, while the world's 358 billionaires have assets exceeding the combined annual incomes of countries with 45 percent of the world's people.
