  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Praise - shouting, hands raised, dancing etc

Hello there,

Just heard an impassioned sermon from our worship leader. Same old stuff I'm afraid. Personally I don't know whether he's right. Talked of how they did praise in the OT. You know - David dancing indecorously, shouting, cymbals, noise.

So why do most Christians not do this? I imagine in a Calvinist church worshippers are mostly bolt-upright with open hands cradling a hymn book.

Is Christianity not a Jewish faith? So what happened to praise?

Although I would only regard myself as "sort of" calvinist I must admit that pop concerts dressed up as religious services make me cringe a bit. It seems to be all about hyping yourself up, and a feel good factor, rather than the worship of God. I remember once seeing a singer at what was supposed to be a religious service, and not once during his crooning did he mention God, Jesus, salvation, the Trinity, or anything else relating to Christianity.

worship God.

when you are dead you;ll know the truth, if God doesn't impress it on your heartt before then.

asking people to do the work of the HS: 'is this right or wrong' will only get such people banned :D

Two things.

Theologically Calvin and most Calvinist churches shifted in favor of simplifying worship. They avoided cluttering up worship with extraneous material in order to focus on the Gospel.

However, Calvin was highly innovative with this simplification. He hired a composer to create brand new antiphonal melodies and to set the Psalms to numerous melodies to vary the worship music across the range of acceptable, simple styles.

After the 1800's Presbyterian churches mostly mainstreamed into conventional hymnody of evangelical churches, including organs. Contemporary churches range the entire map of music styles and emotion in worship.

Yes, but why are such 'Jewish' OT practices regarded by some reformed as 'wrong'?

Is the new covenant 'spiritual' and inward whereas the Old is 'material' and 'visible'?

Flesh this out please
Certainly worship involves the emotions but where the things you mentioned are commonly practiced it is mostly a show. I can praise my Lord and Savior in song without attracting attention to myself. It is also distracting to others which destroys the the focus on Christ.

The difference between what was done in the Old Testament worship in ceremonies and rituals and New Testament worship is that now we don't need the ceremonies and rituals because we have their fulfillment.
