I only have one problem with technology like powerpoint.
It takes prior preparation.

Honestly about half the time, I will step into the pulpit to give a sermon, only to be led spiritually into another topic completely. Those are usually my best sermons, and what notes that I were holding end up crumpled on the floor.

Technology like powerpoint is completely wasted when that happens.
I wouldn't say it's completely wasted if it projects the song lyrics for everyone to follow.

Also, this last year the new staff member/powerpoint guy for my campus ministry just likes to have it projected, but he takes notes as the speaker speaks. So it's in slide mode and everything, it looks professional, he just types the notes as he goes. It was his idea, I wouldn't say everyone would want to do that.

It can be an aid to many, but it can also be a distraction. Some Powerpoint people think that they have to do all sorts or "neat" things such as bringing in the words in multiple ways and in parts of the sermon where there isn't anything specific for them to project they start a whole slideshow of various things so it becomes more like a tv set playing with something other than what the sermon is saying.

So like other things, it shouldn't be overdone. If the focus of people is coming off the pastor and what he is saying, it is overdone.

Some congregations have gone to the extent of the sermon is prerecorded and they play it back. I'm not sure about that yet, I really haven't reached a conclusion. If I'm just going to watch a recording I could do that as easily at home.

Powerpoint is awesome in school..
In church? I don't know yet... My church should be getting a screen and powerpoint sometime after Easter. We will be using it for missionaries & maybe some lessons, but not for music. My church is all hymnal, & they don't like a lot of contemporary christian music. I can't read music so it doesn't mean much to me. Another church I went to put the song lyrics up on a screen, it was okay but I couldn't read it very well from the back.

Not a fan. It just doesn't fit what I'm used to and I get uncomfortable at my in-laws church who does use powerpoint. It feels like they use this set up to feed info to the congregation. It doesn't feel like worship, but rather putting ideas in the minds of the people. It's weird.

At my church it's used for three things:

1. Lyrics of music during praise/worship
2. Key scripture verses when the pastor is speaking.
3. Picture slide shows, like for example when someone returns from a missions trip with a testimony.

Is it used for more than stuff like that where you went?

I think PowerPoint presentations are great at church, however, there is one church I go to, Calvary Chapel in Garden Grove that always seems to be so screwed up. half the time the computer is rebooting and the other half the slides are completely off. You'll be singing a song and a slide from another song appears...

I like it, when it's used in moderation. I think using powerpoints during sermon makes it more interesting, and helps you take notes in case you lost track of, or didn't understand what the Pastor just said.

The nice thing about using powerpoints during worship is that when you have guest singers/bands or guest pastors requesting a song that you don't normally have, you can just easily type it in as we sing. Plus, it looks nice and is easier to read than slide projectors.

My church has started using EasyWorship. Now we have moving backgrounds for our worship powerpoints. While it's nice to look at a flickering candle or a rushing river as you read the lyrics, it's also kind of distracting for me.

Powerpoints are not cheap! Those LCD projectors cost a lot of money!

Yes, they are expensive, and we got totally ripped off on the laptop that came with it. Only 2 1/2 years old, and had to replace it. Tried numerous times and people to fix it, but the HD was shot already. And of course it was out of warranty. Wanted to replace the HD, but then found out other things were wrong with it, and since it had Windows ME, which we all hated, decided not to. Someone in the congregation bought us a new HP with XP, we just installed the SongShow Plus, and other programs we needed, it already had split/dual screen capability. What a difference a good laptop makes.....

We've been using our PowerPoint, every Sunday during the entire service, for almost 7 years now. We've not even had to replace the bulb in the projector.

At the time, the projector, long-throw lens, screen and laptop cost us a total of about $10,000. That's a LOT of money, but spread out over 7 years (and probably for the next 5-10 years), the cost becomes far less.

It's also interesting that projectors have "gone the way of computers". We could buy a more powerful projector, today, for FAR less than we paid for ours 7 years ago. In fact, I believe I could set up a much betters "system" than we now have for less than $6,000.

It's interesting how things work!

FWIW, if a laptop lasts 2.5 years, it isn't a lemon. I would expect to replace a laptop every two to three years. :)
Wow. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite. 30 gig (which was HUGE at the time). I've had it for over 6 years, use it all day every day, and have NEVER done ANYTHING to it. I count myself lucky!
