  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The vulgarness that comes outta my mouth is so bad i dont notice it like , i could easly throw the F word out and not know it . I am trying to more attentive to it and everytime i say a word i say " sorry " ..I hate this its soo nasty ...Sigh , its so hard to break

I used to swear like a sailor. It is a hard habit to break. I finally convinced myself that is not the perception that I wanted to give off. People could be judging me based on my mouth prior to ever getting to know me, and those judgments would not be pleasant. I also realized it was insensitive since some people were very offended by my language and I never could be certain a small child would not hear me. Then I decided that people who spoke that way made me not really listen to their positions seriously since they sounded uneducated.

Uneducated, ill manored, rude, insensitive and crass was not the way I wanted to feel about myself or present myself to others. It took some time and being hyper diligent about my speech, but I cleaned it up completely. Two decades later I slip occasionally and say a "small" curse word, but my daughter is autistic and she can parrot back what she hears easily, so I am wiping those back out of my vocabulary.

I choose silly words as replacements for a while such as "fiddle sticks" and "Jimmine Cricket". I still say "shazzbot" now when I am frustrated :D.

Good luck, and I believe it worth the effort since I felt a lot better about myself after I stopped.

I say silly things to well sometimes lol i took this from " Elf " the movie (( my favorite movie ) ) and they are " Son of a nutcracker " and " Cotten headed ninny muggins"

I to agree on the perception , its a very uneducated sounding thing to hear a person throw out the Fword...I work with diasabled adults and i see alot of other profesional people and work in the community so its a must i stay proper. I desperatly need to curb this ..

It definitely helps to have replacement words. :) Another thing you could try is creating a "swear jar" and every time you let a swear word slip, put a nickel/quarter/dollar in the jar. Every time you remember to use a replacement word, take money out - until you get to a point where the jar is empty for a week straight. It might take a while, but you could use the money at the end of it to splurge on something. Depending on the amount you have at the end, it could be a coffee drink, piece of clothing, pedicure, etc.

My history class set up a swear jar for me where I had to put in £1 every time I swore (about $1.50 for you Americans). I owed £14 within half an hour. >.<
I don't care if it makes me sound stupid, because at the end of the day I am stupid. :)

I would venture a guess that you're not stupid. :) That said, for me, it's less about sounding stupid and more about not being offensive to those around me, including and especially children. We often don't consider the fact that people we aren't even talking to are being exposed to our word choices. So, choosing to be more conscious of that fact can help.

I haven't met that many people who are offended by swearing, I think it's generally more tolerated where I live. It's only really the older generation that are offended by it.

I agree that swearing is generally more accepted. I guess my point is that it is still offensive. In my industry, swearing is pretty common, but I still think it sounds wrong/unprofessional and I try to avoid chiming in just to fit in.

But, you might consider me a part of the "older generation" since I'm in my mid-30s. :p

I am more aware of the other side of the coin now that I have an autistic child. I was at a store the other day and this mother was cursing up a storm to her child about the child's father :(. We were barely in ear shot, but sadly my daughter got an ear full and what she hears in a 30 second time frame could take me months to years to break her of repeating because of her autism (echolalia).

Now I see the damaging other side to cursing because it is simply not flattering to hear a young child saying things they do not even understand.

Heres a question even though its a tad off topic of potty mouth . How do we stop bad thoughts ? If we are judged for out thoughts as well as out actions how do not think ? I have issues with that espically anger ones like when im driving or dealing with work and im upset how do i not think about causeing harm lol ...I also can be quite filthy minded ..lol

I used to never even think of swearing but lately when I've changed circles a bit I've realized I just accidentally sometimes use our local f-word... :o I hate it and every time I do it I'd literally just hit myself if I could. :D But I've heard it's happened to a lot of people so I guess that's not just me being terrible like this.

I think it simply has to be the choice. If we know it is an attitude or behavior that we need to change, then we should be praying and asking God to convict us about it and help us change our hearts/minds.

Consider it an opportunity for growth. :)

Another thing you could try is

Making an effort to give 3 positive/attaboy statments a day (EVERY Blessed DAy)
It will get you in the habit of thinking positively. (I used to could make Eddie Murphy look like a chior boy) I still have slips but I'm way better than I was.

Congrats for recognizing the problem and for your efforts to seek help in changing-that's the way to go!

I'm not easily offended & realizie sometimes what makes a word dirty/foul is other people's connotation of it-don't beat yourself up about it, just replace the "bad" habit with a good one:)
