I am finding it more and more distressing on being told tht I am white, therefore I must be a racist.
My Girlfriend is Chinese. I didn't set out to fall in love with a Chinese girl, nor did I exclude other races, in hopes of finding a Chinese girl.
One of her friends is adamant though, that I will turn out to be racist. That as a white person, My deep seated prejudices will take over.
With that background, it started me thinking about the whole racial issue in the first place.
Can anyone explain to me why "Black Power" is a rally call, "White Power" is a racial slur. Why BET (Black entertainment TV) or the Indochine network, or the TV Latino are all steps for advancement, but if we had the gall to put out WET (a horrible call sign, no doubt) White Entertainment tv, the human rights people would be at the door in a heartbeat?
How about hiring practices? If I don't hire an asian, or a black person, I'm racist, but it's not uncommon for a minority who owns a business only to hire their "own."
For instance, I work for a mutual fund company, which is owned by the Japanese. There is a "glass ceiling" that I will never get by, because I am white. We white people are condemned for it the other way around.
It doesn't just just stop there... White history month would be jeered. Or, how about the Gay pride parade? What would be said if I walked down the street with thousands of others celebrating my Heterosexuality?
We are condemned if we can't tell a vienamese apart from a Chinese, apart from a Korean person, But I would hazard a guess that the average asian can't look at me and tell if my heritage is Scottish, German, French, Scandinavion etc...
I assume that the above seems a bit bigoted, but far from it. I just wonder why we, as white people are vilified for the crimes of our ancestors so readily? Does everyone forget the atrocities of other "races" perpetrated against minorities within their own countries? History is rife with it.
Are we really as bad as we are made out to be, or is it really a case of the Pot calling the Kettle black?
If you would do me a favor, and if you are responding, perhaps mention your background, as it would be very edifying to get the perspective of more than just other white people.
