• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi,

I am having troubles with sensorimotor OCD related to breathing. When I'm trying to fall asleep, I always end up switching my breathing over to manual breathing which then causes me to hyperventilate and hurts my chest. I can't stop thinking about it no matter how much I try. When I try not to do the manual breathing, then I end up holding my breath for a little bit. Throughout the day I can basically forget about my breathing and it becomes automatic, but when I lay down to relax or sleep it comes back. :(

Also, I have COVID so I'd really like to take care of this ASAP. Unfortunately, I was dealing with it before I got COVID.

I'm sorry to hear you have COVID! :( I hope you are doing OK. I've never had a sensorimotor obsession, so I can't offer specific advice related to that. I found this page, which has some information on the treatment of sensorimotor obsessions. This other page also offers some treatment suggestions, and there are more resources if you Google "sensorimotor OCD breathing." I know IOCDF is a legitimate resource, but I'm not sure about the other page and I didn't read the articles thoroughly so please don't take these links as endorsements to the material, just suggestions of places to start researching. It sounds like a frustrating obsession to deal with...I pray that you'll have wisdom to know how to treat it and courage to stand up to the OCD!

The way Jesus helped me deal with anxiety related symptoms was to face the anxiety with Him and in Him and i always overcame the anxiety and found peace. Even though at times it took some time to learn to stay with and in Jesus.

How that works for your conditions i'm not sure but do you focus on Jesus and what He says and does in your anxious state and find peace in His love, or are you focussing on your breathing instead?
