• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello :) how often do you people with depression practice positive thinking? I think if you guys decided to stop all negativity, think only positive and start making positive changes in your life, almost all of your depression will be gone. I have PTSD which is apparently incurable and a symptom of PTSD itself is hopelessness and depression, so I might never completely overcome depression, but the improvements you can do yourself are amazing. If you don't have PTSD or any other serious "incurable" illness causing depression, you can definitely overcome. I decided to take hold of my life, and everything is getting better. I thought everyone hated me, but I ignored it and was positive anyways, and have made some very great friends who seem to be interested in me. I have established an improved daily life and am starting to really enjoy life. I don't even care if PTSD is incurable, I'll probably overcome it anyways. I just have a feeling things are going to get better, and when I get hunches like this they're surprisingly correct a lot of the time. I feel like if you guys gave this a shot you could change your life around. The best part is that when you improve your life like this, you feel inspired to continue, with more confidence and motivation. It's a beautiful thing. I hope this helps and inspires you people. I will probably be on here less now that I have more things going on :) you can do it people, I'll be praying for you <3

Yes to add positives in a depressed heart sure makes a lot of difference, it turned my life around as well.

I'm all for positive thinking but that's not always enough. There are different degrees of depression caused by different things. Some can be beat others people need a lot of help with. It's not always as simple as just changing your way of thinking.

IIt's not always as simple as just changing your way of thinking.

It's not just changing thinking; that's just the beginning. After you change your thinking you put it into actions and change your life. There will be ups and downs, just keep going. Another important thing to do is learn to be happy alone, and stop comparing your life to others. If the depressed person wants to sit around and come up with excuses, that's up to them. Another thing that helps is learning to deal with things. Sleep on a piece of wood in your backyard naked, take cold showers, hunt a lion with a bow (kind of dangerous, be careful :)), face your fears. Become powerful and don't let things get to you. Drink a whole capri sun in one gulp if that makes you feel powerful. Just do something. If you change the present to something positive, you will have no reason to be depressed and miss the past/dread the future.

You aren't wrong.

However, we aren't choosing this and depression is also a chemical imbalance in the brain and not always caused or triggered by surrounding factors.

I have to, for the rest of my life, rely on medication just so I can live and lead a stable life and have a "happy, positive" outlook. The only I chose to do with this monster of an illness? I chose to cut. It was the only other thing that reminded me I was still alive and the only thing I could control.

Saying we're deciding this is saying an anorexic just chose to stop eating, chose to have a fear of food and gaining weight. That's not how it works.

Thinking positively works for me too. And if I can't work up the ability to 'feel' positive, I just act like I am. I get up, I do something (anything) and smile at strangers. After a while I begin to feel better or at least forget that I was depressed.

There's certainly no down side to giving it a try!

Some people are so depressed even meds don't work for them and they are medically ill. They may need hospitalization they are so bad off. I agree that finding positivity is a good goal but it may take quite awhile at times, too.

This is what I am talking about right here. We do not choose to have a chemical imbalance. Like chaoticfly I also will be on medication the rest of my life for depression. I agree with what you are saying though. A positive outlook is good to have.

What does help with positivity, especially for people like me, is to write a list of three or seven happy things that happened in the day to serve as a reminder that the day isn't as cloudy. I do this on my really bad days. I'll write up a list and text it to one of my friends so they know that

1) I'm still breathing
2) I'm still trying
3) I need help
4) I'm keeping up with my promise

Such wise words from such a young man.

Matthew 25:23

New King James Version (NKJV)

23 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

When we suffer from a depressive illness it is even more important to learn to take in positives to negate the constant negativity we must experience.

I thank the Lord for my wife and children, I thank Him for my grand children. I thank Him for the place I live. I thank Him for the air I breath. I thank Him for the promises He has made us in His Word. I thank and praise Him that I'm loved by Him and that He will take care of me no matter how useless I feel, He will make something good out of it anyway.

Above all I thank and praise Him that I can build with His good life inside of my psyche - build with His love, long suffering endurance, patience, hope, kindness, self-control, hope and the likes.

Building with His good life has gotten me away from my suicidal depression and has given me much more hope to survive my depressive bouts.

I know that being positive works, even when I got a depressive illness.

I totally agree Joshua. IMHO while positive thinking may not be a miraculous cure for depression it can help. When we are depressed we have a tendency to think negatively all the time which only makes us even more depressed. Then the more depressed we get the more negative we get and it becomes a vicious circle.
