  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is a sad thing in society these days. What is interesting is the variety of folks who steal packages.

It really bothers me when couriers leave it by the door. They are supposed to try and re-deliver. It's especially annoying when they forge your signature and leave it, or leave and and claim it was "handed to resident". Sorry, didn't receive it. Send another one.

"These days"? Was there really ever a time when this was not a problem?

Well, maybe Camelot for a time, or the Garden of Eden...
I don't know it seems different to me. These people weren't even worried about getting caught or a neighbor seeing and reporting them. I know I was surprised at how nonchalant they were.

LOL! Well even the Garden of Eden became rather iniquitous after a while.

Well for a couple of them they quickly lost their "non-chalant-ness".

The boldness of some thieves is quite something. My late father-in-law had to chain wicker chairs to the front porch to prevent their theft. At my house, someone took a quite heavy plant and urn off the porch.

If I lived in a neighborhood were this was a problem I would inform all my neighbors that they could have their packages shipped to my home and pick them up there.

It has always been there but is really prevalent now. The thieves are nonchalant about it.

I liked the story about the women who box up her dog poop for thieves. ^_^ What a surprise they got!

Yep!

I saw another video where the thief broke their ankle in the process, without even the fake gun fire.

Thievery seems to happen in odd ways. Where my parents live in Texas, someone was smashing car windows in the church parking lot in order to steal purses in cars. People get desperate, even in areas where crime isn't a big factor.

I'm going to be the oddball and post a little story of a different way of dealing with thieves.

Quote:
They said of Abba Macarius that a thief went into his cell when he was away. When Macarius came back and found the thief loading his things onto a camel, without saying anything he went into his cell, picked up his things and helped the thief load them onto the camel. When the loading was finished, the thief began to beat the camel to make it get up but in vain. Seeing that it did not get up, Abba Macarius went inside his cell, found a small hoe, picked it up and put it onto the camel saying, "Brother, the camel wants to have this, too." Then the old man kicked it, saying, "Get up." At once the camel got up and went forward a little, because of his command. Then it lay down again and refused to get up until it was completely unloaded; only then did it set of.
:sorry:

AFAIK this is a fairly recent development. I can trace it back to the 1960s but it seems almost unheard of prior to that. Even during the Great Depression it was extremely rare for a person to steal things from other people's porches. Perhaps that was because before the 1960s there was almost always some one at home? Perhaps it was because people did not receive packages in the same way they do now. Perhaps it was fear of the laws about interfering with the functions of the Post Office? Probably it is all those things and the fact that respecting the property of others no longer is considered an important societal norm by large portions of the populace.
