When por and an infinitive are together, does it translate to English meaning by or through something?

Let me see if I understand the question correctly. You would like to know the proper usage of constructions such as "por correr", "por hablar", or "por pensar"? The only proper usage for these phrases, as far as I can remember right now, is to express the cause of a certain action. In example, if someone asks "Why was the child punished?", you could reply "por correr" (because he was running).
