This thread probably isn't as specific or detailed as others in the Scriptures forum but I am curious as to people's ideas.

The question is what would you say is the most popular or widely known Bible verse, and why has it gained such a reputation?

Personally I think it's probably John 3:16 simply because it sums up what Jesus did for everyone, and that salvation is never out of reach.
I'd imagine it's closely followed by verses such as 1 Peter 5:7 and Psalm 23.

If I ever conduct a funeral service, I pledge not to use this scripture. It's used far too much.

So, Psalm 23 is often used at funerals ---what is wrong with that? It surely bears repeating, since it is comforting to families who miss the departed one ---especially when many know the person was a true believer in God.

Nothing's wrong with it but I do agree it is used quite a lot. Pretty much the whole Bible provides comfort so it would be nice to mix some other verses in as well

I was about to say that, I always look at the whole Bible.

I cannot speak for other people, let me speak for myself, the most popular verse for me is Isaiah 64:8, because it is the will of God that is the most important.

I think that works quite well with Isaiah 54:14
