  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Depends who you talk to. Roman Catholics who care about the issue will deny it and say that Joan is a mistranslation of a man's name. That is a possibility. Others hold to the view that she was a woman and also was Pope. My own opinion is that, if that is the greatest problem of the papacy, then we have to really ignore some really hair-raising stuff.

I haven't studied this particular story but I have studied Church History extensively. I think the possibility of a woman having been Pope is highly unlikely. I think it is fairly safe to conclude this is simply wishful and revisionist thinking.

well it was said that she was a girl who dressed as a boy to go to school, then no one found out she was a woman so she latter bacame a priest and then went to bishop and then pope!
the legand has it that as she was getting crowned pope she gave birth to a child! she was having an affiar with one of the monks, and she was beaten to death by the cardinals.
I think it is kind of an urban legand, a way for the common folk to laugh at the clergy, then latter it was used by the Reformers to attack the Catholic Church

Was there really a female Pope named Joan during the Middle Ages? Or is it just a myth? Curious...

No, it's a myth. It is a story that was in popular circulation years ago. However, we have a list and history of all the Popes and "Joan" is not one of them. You can pick any year and we can look up who the Pope was and a little history about him.

yea but the story goes that "Joan" was killed like right after the crowning, so theoriticly they could have just changed the story on who was elected.
I had a "women in medieval europe class" so I know everything about this topic lol, just kidding, but we did talk about Pope Joan for a good bit, the story was first written down about 400 (AD850) years after it was suposed to take place, then the next version to come out said that only 200 years had passed making pope joan around in 1050, either way both of these accounts were written in the 1200's much in advance to really be counted as trust worthy.
