The Anglican Archbishop of York presented a gift of beer to Pope Benedict XVI on his recent trip to the Vatican

[...] [He]presented the Pope with [...] a cut-glass beer tankard from the Minster.

He also gave to the Pope two Yorkshire beers, Holy Grail beer and Black Sheep Ale from the Black Sheep Brewery.

Archbishop Sentamu said the gifts were chosen to reflect the Pope’s appreciation for Bavarian beer. The gifts pleased the Pope, who is Bavarian by birth and prefers beer to wine and water

I had to cut out the non-beer related parts to comply with copyright law. :) But non-beer related parts aren't important anyway, in general, right? ;)

Bavarian beer is the best - I'm thinking of the Hefeweizen types. All the good Hefeweizen breweries are from Bavaria.

Not only does the pope like beer so he's alright, but it gets even better: he loves Mozart and (even better still) he loves cats. So he's a great guy. :)

Sam Adams makes a Hefeweizen domestically here in the United States. I was thinking about trying it. What are Hefeweizen beers like? Would trying one made outside of Germany be a complete waste of time? ;)

No, please try if you can! I've never tasted American beer, but if they make it the same way (according to the German Reinheitsgebot) it'll taste good.

It's made of wheat, which makes it less clear, and it sometimes has a slightly banana-ish taste (not exactly sweet though). Also, it can be a bit citrusy. It's a mild, soft-tasting type of beer. And very refreshing in summer. Not bitter like pilsner. But light in colour (it's also called Weissbier, literally 'white beer', although I'm guessing that the 'white' here - also in Dutch witbier - is etymologically related to 'wheat'). I love it.

Usually sold in half litre bottles over here. We just bought some today. Löwenweisse. Weihenstephan and Schneider Weisse are great too.

How can a wheat beer comply with the Reinheitsgebot? Didn't it limit ingredients in beer to barley, hops, and water (Possible yeast also)?

I've tried a few wheat beers before with mixed results. Sam Adams makes some seasonal wheats (winter lager and white ale) that are pretty good, but I tried a couple of Hacker-Pschorr dark wheats that I really didn't care for at all, too sweet (In fairness, though, they weren't exactly brewery fresh and may have turned bad over time). So, I guess the Hefeweizen could go either way -- I'll have to try it sometime and see.

Most American brewers don't produce products that comply with the Reinheitsgebot, but Samuel Adams claims that it's Boston Lager product does, and in fact I think it was the first American beer regularly offered for sale in Germany.

Well, it is according to the Reinheitsgebot, so I assume wheat instead of barley is allowed, too.

I thought Sam Adams' was very good. I believe it was in their summer pack this last year.

My favorite is Widmer if you can get it on tap. The closer to Portland the better.

It's my summer beer.

Well, its not like drinking in moderation is a sin so good for the Pope!

Anyway, I don't know about international beers but all the domestic beers I have ever drank were absolutely disgusting in my opinion. Way too bitter.

Mmmm, that's the way I like it. I prefer to buy locally with a strong preference to the microbrews of the Pacific NW.
