This has been a growing area of concern in some places in the world. And one many developed areas are not up to speed with concerning the challenges. It is good this is getting some mention.

I am (remotely) involved in a project that designed a very low cost ($14) water filtration system that is able to clean enough water to keep up with the needs of 4 families. My employer, to their credit, takes stewardship very seriously and is selling these units at cost to charities like WorldVision who by them in bulk and distribute them. It doesn't help people who have no access to water, but it does help people who can only access clean water. You could put human waster in an safely injest the filtered product. That isn't recommended, but the system is that good.
