Over a year after summarily removing Bishop Joseph Strickland from his diocese of Tyler, Texas, Pope Francis has appointed Bishop John Kelly, auxiliary bishop of Dallas, to succeed him.

TYLER, Texas — Pope Francis today announced Bishop John Kelly of Dallas as the new bishop of the Diocese of Tyler, over one year since the Pope removed Bishop Joseph Strickland from the Texas see.

Via the daily Holy See press bulletin, the Pope’s new choice for the Diocese of Tyler was finally revealed. Bishop John Gregory Kelly will now lead the diocese, after having been an auxiliary in the Diocese of Dallas since early 2016.

So bishop Strickland gets replaced finally but no word on the evils that he must have done to need replacing. Oddly he is still a bishop in good standing, albeit without a diocesan assignment. Every bishop has a diocesan assignment, even if it is in name only to some defunct North African diocese wiped out by the Muslims a thousand years ago.
