Holy See announces Francis will appear at hospital window Sunday

After month-long absence, Pope Francis to appear at hospital window Sunday

Faithful followers of Pope Francis have reason to rejoice this weekend as the Holy Father prepares for a momentous return to public view, the Vatican announces on Saturday.

After weeks of prayer vigils and concerned speculation about his health, the 88-year-old pontiff will appear at a window of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital this Sunday to offer his blessing following the Angelus prayer.

This brief but symbolic appearance marks a turning point in what has been a challenging period for the universal Church, whose shepherd has been absent from public ministry since mid-February.

While the written text of his Angelus reflection will continue to be distributed as it has been throughout his convalescence, this appearance will be a spiritual milestone.

Time frame for Pope Francis’ discharge from hospital still uncertain

The Holy See Press Office says on Friday the timing for Pope Francis’ eventual discharge from Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment since Feb. 14, is still uncertain.

Due to a better exchange of gasses, the pope’s high-flow oxygen therapy has been reduced during the day. High-flow oxygen is now used at night in place of noninvasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican communications organ says.

The 88-year-old pontiff did not have any visitors at the hospital in recent days, which he has spent receiving treatment, doing respiratory and physical therapy, in work, and in prayer.

After over a month in the hospital for chronic and acute respiratory infections, including double pneumonia, the Holy See Press Office notes that Pope Francis is in stable condition and showing “small improvements.”

The text of the pope’s weekly message for the Angelus is expected to be published and distributed on Sunday.

Doctors are not expected to issue another medical bulletin before Monday, March 24, the press office says.

A ‘thumbs up’ to the faithful as Pope Francis released from hospital

Pope Francis returns to Vatican after first public appearance in weeks

Pope Francis is released from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Sunday after more than a month’s stay at the facility amid a series of health scares.

Before returning to Casa Santa Marta, after his discharge from the hospital, Pope Francis is taken to the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore and delivers flowers to place before the icon of the Virgin Salus Populi Romani. He then finally returns to the Vatican, according to the Holy See.

Before departing the clinic, he appears on a fifth-floor balcony, offering a brief greeting and blessing to a chanting crowd of the faithful gathered below.

The window greeting marks his first public engagement in weeks after a 38-day hospitalization for bilateral pneumonia and other conditions.

The text of his Angelus reflection is distributed in written form as it has been in recent weeks. The 88-year-old pontiff reflects on the day’s Gospel reading about the barren fig tree, noting how his own hospital stay has allowed him to “experience the patience of the Lord” reflected in the care of medical staff.

Pope Francis also calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and expresses hope for the newly agreed peace accord between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Officials confirmed on Saturday the pontiff will continue convalescing at his Casa Santa Marta apartment for at least two months, requiring ongoing oxygen therapy during his recovery.

Pope Francis makes first public appearance in weeks, returns to Vatican

Shortly before returning to his home in the Vatican on Sunday, Pope Francis made a brief appearance from a fifth-floor balcony of the Gemelli Clinic in Rome to a crowd of faithful gathered outside the hospital.

The moment marked his first public engagement in weeks. Waving and giving a “thumps-up” before blessing the faithful gathered outside Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the pontiff briefly thanked one well-wisher for bringing flowers for the occasion.

After the short interaction, the Holy Father was discharged from the hospital and taken to the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, where he delivered flowers to place before the icon of the Virgin Salus Populi Romani.

Afterward, he returned to the Vatican, according to the Holy See.

The pontiff prepared a written message published by the Vatican while briefly appearing at approximately noon to greet the faithful and impart his blessing.

“During this long period of hospitalization, I have had the opportunity to experience the patience of the Lord, which I also see reflected in the tireless care of doctors and health care workers as well as in the attentiveness and hopes of the patients’ families,” Francis noted.

“This confident patience, anchored in God’s love that never fails, is truly necessary for our lives, especially to face the most difficult and painful situations.”

In his written address, the pope reflected on this third Sunday of Lent’s Gospel reading about the barren fig tree, drawing parallels between the patient farmer in the parable and God’s merciful approach to humanity.

On the situation in Gaza, the pope called for a ceasefire and “that weapons be silenced immediately; and that there be the courage to resume dialogue, so that all hostages may be freed and a definitive ceasefire reached.”

Francis emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Gaza “is once again extremely serious and requires the urgent commitment of the warring parties and the international community.”

On a more positive note, the Holy Father expressed satisfaction with diplomatic progress in the Caucasus region.

“I am pleased, however, that Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed on the final text of the peace agreement,” he said. “I hope that it will be signed as soon as possible and can thus contribute to establishing a lasting peace in the South Caucasus.”

Convalescing in Casa Santa Marta

Prior to his window appearance and return to the Vatican, Pope Francis briefly met with medical staff and the hospital leadership to thank them for his treatment.

Hospital officials indicated on Saturday that the pope will continue convalescing at his apartment in Casa Santa Marta for at least two months and will require ongoing oxygen therapy during his convalescence.

Doctors said at a Saturday press conference that Francis would undergo a “protected discharge” and would “still have to carry out” treatment “for a long time.”

Archbishop Paglia: Pope Francis is showing us the frailty of old age

Pope Francis, in his weakness, is teaching the world about human frailty, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia said Monday at a press conference for a Vatican summit on longevity.

The pope has shown “that old age is also marked by frailty, and frailty should not be rejected. It is not to be … expelled like the devil,” the archbishop and president of the Pontifical Academy for Life said at the Holy See Press Office on March 24, one day after Pope Francis returned to the Vatican after 38 days in the hospital.

While Francis, in his illness, has lost his ability to speak at the moment, he is teaching us with his body “the importance of old people,” Paglia added. “Pope Francis reminds us that it is actually a voice that should be deafening: that of the frail, who remind us that we do not live forever.”

The Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life sponsored the first Vatican Longevity Summit on March 24 at the Augustinianum Conference Center in Rome to reflect with scientific and academic institutions on how to promote “a model of longevity that does not limit itself to extending the years of life but to enriching them in terms of quality, dignity, and sustainability, integrating science, ethics, and spirituality.”
