My mother always put popcorn in a bowl and poured milk on it. For her it was a kind of desert, ... left over habit from the Depression. It was alright, but I didn't really care for it. But when you think about it, corn cereals aren't much different.

urr.... sounds about as appetizing as the milk covered bread in a bowl that my father still enjoys from time to time (he is 81). They lived on a farm when he was born during the latter part of the depression. To him it was a treat. Like you, I didn't much care for it either. How spoiled we've become, lol

That does not sound appetizing at all! I know what happens when bread gets wet! Gross!

Hmmmm......

I guess I am rather spoiled...

Actually, we were quite poor and we had bread with milk many times that was our dessert, sprinkled with a little sugar. Keep in mind this was always homemade bread. It was and is quite good.

I wouldn't think of using the bread/milk combo with the store bought stuff. <shudder>

Hmmm.....

Is there a big difference in store bought and homemade bread?

heh, I don't even like bread pudding and that amounts to the same thing really, just baked again.

then again, maybe there is something to the home-made quality as it is usually more dense. Store bought bread today is... well it just rather dissolves when wet LOL.

Plus perhaps the milk as well. I drink fat free milk which is practically water.

I wonder now about homemade bread with a "whole" milk. Though I am just not strong enough to go out and try :D

Is there a difference between a Yugo and a Mercedes Benz?

Never driven either. I don't know past the packaging.

Yep, we milked our own cows until 1960. Nothing better!

Okay, another analogy ... which is better to go between New York and Los Angeles: horse and buggy or 757 jet?

ummm... *looks dumbfounded*

Never been to NYC or LA...

Never been in a horse and buggy or 757...

But a horse and buggy would be nice and relaxing so long as you didn't need to get there quickly

And a 757 would be nice if you had a long distance to travel...

I suppose each would have their own qualities.

heh and yes I am being difficult :D

Hmmmm .... even if you haven't been, how about from LA to Hong Kong? Buggy would be pleasant until the water was ...

Well, you get the idea. :D ^_^

Homemade bread is that much better! My wife makes our bread (most of the time - her arthritis makes it difficult at times). So we buy some at the health food store.

Back to the topic:

I don't like caramel popcorn - causes havoc with my teeth when I eat it. I couldn't eat corn on the cob for 50+ years. As a kid I could a little, but my teeth hurt so bad. Now occasionally I can eat it, but I have to be careful. Likewise, I do not like caramel apples either. I like caramels by themselves, but not with anything.

A few years ago, we received on of those packages with different flavored popcorn... I tried them all, didn't really care for any of them, although cheddar cheese was passable, but gets overwhelming after three handfuls [of popcorn, not flavorings ].

Hey, I agree.

I've never been to those places, driven those cars, or ridden in those things.

But I do understand the point filo is trying so hard to make!

Simpler the better. I do like lightly buttered, lightly salted - but no flavorings other than that, none, zip, nada. Given the right popcorn, I would just as soon do without the salt and butter.

When we first went to the movies (mid 1950's), my mother would pop popcorn for us to take and eat there - we could barely afford the 10 cent admission, and we could only go about once every 4-5 months.

She also popped popcorn for us to take to football games, basketball games, hockey games.... We couldn't afford anything else. I remember when my father finally made $3,000 for the entire year, and we could actually buy pop at a sports event - only one, though.

Saturday nights in the 1950's was for watching Saturday Night Boxing (Floyd Patterson, etc.). My mother made popcorn and she made a fudge with peanut butter and oatmeal. Oh, that brings back memories. My mother always put popcorn in a bowl and poured milk on it. For her it was a kind of desert, ... left over habit from the Depression. It was alright, but I didn't really care for it. But when you think about it, corn cereals aren't much different.

Yep, plain old popcorn. :D

But life was good back then, wasn't it, Filo? No inflated expectations or instant gratification and the idea of reaching people 24/7 was unimaginable.

Can we call you John Boy? :p

I love oatmeal and cream of wheat, BTW. They are staples in my house, especially during cooler weather. :yum:

There's a big difference!!

I like my popcorn buttery and salty.

I bought some chex mix yesterday, it was chocolate/peanut butter flavor. Wasn't sure if I'd like it but its hard to put away. Can't just take one bite.

How is the sale of the house coming along?
