There are certain times when the fetus is (a) not viable, and (b) endangering its mother's life. It may be that this should not be considered an "abortion" but rather a life-saving surgical procedure.
When the baby is endangering its mother's life that makes the situation a bit more complicated because often the child has a very low chance of survival as well.
