One would think that if any lesson is to be learned from the Terry Schiavo case, it would be that every adult should have a written AD. And by all means, if you do want tube feeding, or any other kind of life support--put it in writing. And it's crucially important if you think there may be conflicts among your family members regarding end-of-life issues.

But how many people actually have an AD?

Don't be a flabby sack of flesh, stop treatment, DNR, donate your organs, put them to use instead of having them waster away in some shell. I would not want a feeding tube or any of that stuff trying to keep me alive.

To further back up and shore up this AD or LW, I would advise regular updates, even annual ones. Established updates that do not markedly change the meaning of the LW make for a strong case of the person's desires under specific circumstances.

I don't have one yet, but I'm working towards one. At the very least, I've let all my family know my intentions, very clearly, and I've posted it on my blog. Should I veg out before I execute one, my wife should have little trouble proving my intentions in a court of law.
