A few days ago Trump made some tariff related threats to Canada and mexico.
He had a conversation with the president of mexico on the phone soon after and reported good progress.

Wow! Good news for America. Trump is already solving this problem.

Unfortunately the Mexican president very quickly corrected trump.
Mexico's president says its 'position is not to close borders' in response to Trump's claim

so I wonder:
What was the political play going on to make a claim like that when his compatriot would obviously correct him?

Help me understand the strategy of lying so brazenly and if you think we can expect Trump to employ this strategy throughout his presidency.

Um, is it even legal for the president-elect to be conducting foreign policy before he takes office? Or is this just something, another thing, we the People, just acquiesce to nowadays?

Trump will secure the border ... if we get cooperation ... great ... if not then likely he will impose tariffs. Trump always seeks cooperation from other countries first. A lot gets "said" ... will just have to see what actually happens.

No.

We don't want another threat on THAT topic thank you.

This thread is about POLITICAL STRATEGY and whether lying like this will be advantageous.

Please keep comments to the topic and not get dragged into another silly border thread where the same thing get repeated by rhe same people.

Is outright lying a good political strategy with the American public?

Anyone--including me--can call up a foreign leader and try to talk policy if they want. The difference between a president-elect and me is that a foreign leader will actually return a president-elect's calls.

Or is this a reference to the Logan Act, passed in 1799 to try to prohibit private citizens from engaging in negotiations with foreign countries? No one in US history has ever been convicted under the act, and it seems blatantly unconstitutional (First Amendment and all that), so any actual attempt to enforce it would almost certainly just result in the act being struck down, hence why no one actually tries to enforce it. Congress really should've repealed it long ago.

The intimidation of using tariffs and/or actually using them IS a political strategy. It is on topic because Trump has clearly stated he will use them in lieu of non-cooperation. We don't know what the actual conversation was and who may or may not be lying.

Sheinbaum appeared to refute this on X, saying they had discussed Mexico's strategies to curtail migration into the U.S. but Mexico's policy was "not to close borders, but to build bridges between governments and their peoples."

Addressing the apparent discrepancy, Sheinbaum told reporters it came down to different communication styles.

Lines get blurred when you factor in that he was also a former president.

For instance, Obama still meets with certain leaders to discuss specific aspects of policy despite no longer being the president.

He met with Rishi Sunak, as well as recently participating in a meeting with Asia-Pacific leaders as well.

I think it's the "former president" aspect that grants certain leeway and not the "President-Elect" aspect.

The point is not so much to get people believing in various false things.

Its to get them to believe in nothing, and conclude that questions of reality are not worth trying to decide on.

We can already see how this strategy is paying off.

You'll note that in the OP, I delineated the political strategy that this particular thread was going to address.

Addressing the apparent discrepancy, Sheinbaum told reporters it came down to different communication styles.
Yes. Clearly, Trump's tweet on the matter was manipulative and tricky. Any doubt of that? Look at the thread started on this topic and the positive response trump supporters gave to the message in the OP. I mean, they LOVED something that wasn't even true. And when the other head of state clarified, they spent pages of threads trying to "what he said was" and not even realizing that they themselves "had misunderstood" Trump.

Sheinbaum's response was nice, clear, direct, unequivocal and not mired in confusion. Her supporters understand exactly what she said.

As far as I can tell his supporters still believe Trumps x post to be the Truth.
