WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s prime minister said his country is no longer sending arms to Ukraine as a trade dispute between the neighboring states escalates and his populist party faces pressure from the far right in the upcoming national election.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a television interview late Wednesday that Poland is “no longer transferring any weapons to Ukraine because we are now arming ourselves with the most modern weapons” in a military modernization plan spurred by fears of Russian aggression in the region.

Poland needs to upgrade its military if it doesn't want a repeat of WWII but from the east instead of the west. It is bad that they are having disputes with Ukraine, but there is not much they can do about the trade issues since Russia is blockading Ukraine's ports.

In a radio inteview with a Polish official (I don't recall the name), he noted that Poland simply doesn't have any more arms to give. Their Soviet era equipment is depleted and of course, they need to look out for their nation's defense capabilities.

I'm curious as to if other countries will follow suit and start taking a more isolationist "sorry, but we gotta look out for ourselves" approach. Obviously no country wanted to be seen as "the first to bail on helping Ukraine", but now that one has done it, wonder if it'll have a domino effect.

Although, if the onus is going to be on the US to borrow more money against our own credit line in order to be able to finance new weapons to give them, I wonder if that onus will be in place for other countries too.

Poland has more of a vested interest in keeping Russia in-check than we do (they're not right down the street from us, figuratively), any reason why they shouldn't borrow money to assist Ukraine like what people are expecting us to do?

Poland has already done a lot....including the influx of Ukranian war refugees, there's an understandable feeling that Poland has done enough. I don't see how the Polish president could justify borring money to assist further given the context.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, some four million people fled across the border into Poland, mostly women, children and elderly men. Around one million refugees are still there.

The WHO, together with Polish and Ukrainian authorities, are working to prevent TB adding to the many challenges they face.

[The article notes

Poland has supplied Ukraine with a wide range of weaponry, including Leopard 2 tanks and Soviet-era MiG fighter jets. Poles are still largely in favor of supporting Ukraine, believing their nation would be vulnerable if Russia were to prevail just across the border. But there is also a growing weariness in society with the large numbers of refugees.

Ahead of the national election on Oct. 15, the far-right Confederation party has said that Poland is not getting the gratitude it deserves for arming Ukraine and accepting its refugees. And emotions have been running high since Poland, Hungary and Slovakia announced a new ban on Ukrainian grain imports last week, saying they wanted to protect their farmers.
