My friend, rosetryst, and I started talking about Dr. James Dobson's recent claim about Spongebob Squarepants. We decided that all cartoons must make you gay.

Hers is here (as her LJ is friends locked, but we wanted to share this silliness!)
I was talking with
kagomeshuko today, and we discussed what would happen if James Dobson discovered that we had, in fact, been made gay by children's television. (It was Bert and Ernie--c'mon, two guys, living together? And Bert has seen Ernie taking a bath? And PLAYED WITH HIS RUBBER DUCKIE?!) We thought that Dobson might resort to a forcible cartoon de-gaying. Then, we tried to think of cartoons that would "re-heterize" us. Turns out this is more difficult than we thought. Here is the gist of what we discussed (I would have posted the conversation in its entirety, but it was kind of long):
She-Ra---turns the women into lesbians.
He-man---turns the men gay.
Smurfs---only one female around. Also, is Smurfette the secret mother of Baby Smurf or what? (We theorize she was having a secret love affair with Papa Smurf.)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles---four males living together. The scandal!
Strawberry Shortcake---not enough men to teach us about "gender roles." Also, probably creates lesbians just like She-Ra.
Carebears?---Nah, they're all obviously gay, what with the happiness and sunshine.
Superman?---Totally gay. The tights, the cape? [As she noted: "I mean, you know, wearning tights just automatically makes a guy gay, too (hmm. . .poor Joe Namath)."]
The Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon, Theodore)---the chipmunks are obviously gay, with those "long shirts." Besides, that high-pitched singing? Total giveaway.
Chip and Dale--two males, living together, always "collecting nuts" ...
Scooby-Doo---might *not* promote gayness, but there's the Drug Factor (Shaggy and Scooby are totally stoned), the Illicit Sex Factor (just what are Daphne and that guy doing in the van all that time?), and the Possible Bestiality Factor (Shaggy DOES spend a lot of time with Scooby, and none chasing after eligible women).
So. Can any of you come up with a selection of "re-heterizing" cartoons for Focus on the Family? 'Cuz clearly, most cartoons are a threat to our children.

So, obviously, we're all messed up and the cartoons we watched as children (and even watch now) harmed us, right?
Stein Auf!
