I'm blind without my glasses, and have been wearing them since 7th grade. I'm not able to have contacts, and wouldn't like them, anyways....good thing, huh? Nevertheless, my new eye doctor still tries to sell me on contacts. I keep saying, "But I can't wear them!" He looks in my file, and says, "Oh yeah!" .... lol :sorry:
I can wear them and I like them, but right now, I've just been in the mood for wearing my glasses.

So, why am I asking about Methodist doctrines? No big worries, I'm Lutheran, but I heard that a local methodist church may be losing their youth minister soon, so. . .

Something about John Wesley. I don't know much about Methodist doctrines, but I have a couple of friends who are Methodists. We have a Methodist church downtown with a woman minister. That would feel odd, I think, but having never been to a church service with a woman minister....well, it would take some getting used to, I guess. I'll never know, because I'll never go! haha...I like our Lutheran church too much. :holy:

I don't think LCMS does that. However, I don't believe there is anything wrong with it. ;) We had a great lady leader in our mult-denominational weekly Bible study called Bible Study Fellowship years ago, and she was super. So I know women can handle the job.

Charlene,

I don't doubt that women can handle the job as my mother was a teaching leader of the very same organization you mention. She was involved with BSF for over 20 years. Now ask your Pastor what he thinks of BSF and then ask him what the LCMS stand on BSF is.

As for women as ministers I look to Paul's letters to the Corinthians and Timothy as my proof-text. Regardless of the equality of today between Men and Women, Paul specifically stated that the reason for not allowing a woman to have authority over a man was due to the order of creation and not because she couldn't handle the job. One of Paul's good friends and acquaintances was Priscilla. I am sure that she would have been more than qualified to do what Paul did in many areas, but she did not and the only time we hear of her getting involved in a situation is in the rebuke of Apollos.

We can talk all day about how women are equally capable of doing what a man can do (and some might argue that they can do it better), but the point is creative order not capability.

Have you gotten any snow down in the south? The ice storm went south of us, thanks to a nice little arctic blast. There was a tornado touch- down near my brother's town.
No snow here. . .on Christmas, heard there was some in the area, but it wasn't enough to stay on the ground or anything. . .but it wasn't here for long, either. Some people were lucky enough to see it - not me, but that's okay.

Scott,
I really don't care what my Pastor thinks about BSF, as I attended that Bible study long before becoming a Lutheran. As I have stated many times here on this board I was in membership in other churches before finding Grace Lutheran (LCMS) as "the" church for me. Please do not lecture me, either, about what Paul stated in Corinthians, as I know very well what it says. I am saying this is pleasantly as possible, but this particular Scripture is completely taken out of context many times just for this argument. Taking it in this way usually means you have to throw out many other verses of the Bible that contradict that notion. I won't debate it here, however one of these days I plan on writing up a Bible study on this very topic. If the Bible doesn't agree with itself, then we have misinterpreted it.

I know you mean well, and I'm not angry. I've been in Bible study for many years. I'm not exactly a dummy when it comes to knowledge of Scripture.

Thanks,
Charlene

Scott,
My time with BSF was many years before becoming Lutheran. Why should I ask my Pastor about this? (actually, we have no Pastor at this time because his wife filed for divorce)...in fact, a previous Pastor let the BSF meetings come to our church for a time. Anyway, I see nothing wrong with BSF because it supports many differing faiths, much in the same way as christianforums.com does. We were not allowed to debate, or argue about doctrine, but merely state our opinion on the topic we were studying.

I view the idea of taking one verse of Scripture, and making that a foundation for doctrine is wrong. It is not balanced. You mentioned Priscilla, but there were more women involved with a called ministry, prophets, and leaders mentioned in the Bible. I know the idea of women not allowed to speak is very strong, but it still wrong because it simply is taken out of context.

Women:

First to sin - Genesis 3:6
Last at the cross - Matthew 27:55-56, Mark 15:40-41
First at the sepulchre-Mark 15:46-47, 16:1-6, Luke 23:27, 28, 49, 55, 56; 24: 1-10

First to whom risen Lord appeared - Mark 16:9, John 20:15-18

As Prophets:

Miriam - Exodus 15: 20, 21
Micah 6:4

Deborah - Judges 4:4,5
Huldah - 2 Kings 22:14-20, 2 Chronicles 34:22-28
Noadiah - Nehemiah 6:14
Anna - Luke 2:36-38
Philip's Daughters - Acts 21:9

And this is just scratching the surface.

Paul specifically stated that the reason for not allowing a woman to have authority over a man was due to the order of creation and not because she couldn't handle the job.

I know this isn't pointless, but.... oh well. I'll throw in randomness at the end to make it kinda pointless.

Creation order was identified as the reason... okay then, the fish, birds, amoebas, et al are now to control mankind, as they were created before Adam.

Creative order was a holdover from the very strict Jewish days, number one. And number 2, Paul may use it as justification, but there is no law of God found in the Scriptures that Paul himself references (the OT and Jesus) that says "man was created first, so man shall be a pastor and no woman can be."

Now for the pointless part.... TV can be very good, or very bad. Watch Angel reruns on TNT... and Buffy on FX. It'll be good.

When I was a kid I used to go to bed, and when I thought my mother and father were sound asleep, I would sneak the reading lamp on (it was hanging on the headboard - a cute, frilly one) and read a book until midnight. I got away with that most of the time. ;)
