I wish I could have friendly debates with my dad. He is on an opposite end of the spectrum than me. Any discussion on the subject is only him talking and me listening. I'm college educated, watch many different news sources, read different news sources, and pay plenty of taxes, but I don't understand enough to be worthy enough to discuss it with him.Luthers Rose said:I already know who I am going to vote for and no debate will change my mind. I have had some wonderful debate with my college-aged son--who, of course, prefers the other candidate. He makes some good points but I always tell him that it doesn't matter what he says, he and his kind don't vote so they won't have an impact and that's why my guy will win!

Yes, but most of the American public, when answering the poll, probably didn't understand "likability" and chose the person that best conveyed what they think is the correct direction to go. (tongue in cheek, well maybe a little)SLStrohkirch said:Watching CBS this morning they were showing that a poll taken afterwards showed that Kerry's likability was twice as much as Bush.
Likeability doesn't necessarily a good president make. Lincoln was hated by a good many people during his first term and there was talk at the time that his own party wouldn't even nominate him. Yet he did win a second term only to be taken out by a Southern radical who could not accept that his side lost the war.
and I did not watch it. . .I don't know. .I just can't stand them. . .netgenius2 said:I watched the debate. I listened to the debate. It was an exercise in discipline. Having spent 12 years on city council, I recognize talking points when I hear them. I will be paying attention to the rest of the "debates" as well. I value my freedom, and I want to protect it.
Sometimes people think I'm asleep during the sermon. . .LOL. .but it helps me to concentrate on it if I close my eyes and listen. I tend to get distracted and want to do something or read something if my eyes are open, so I sit with them closed and listen.netgenius2 said:Sometimes its hard to listen to the sermon too. But I know its good for me.
Well, I'll admit it...I am a sermon junkie. I love sermons. I take copious notes. Just about every margin in my wide margin bible is full! I get frustrated sometimes because Lutheran sermons are so short. Of course, my pastor is a fabulous preacher...that is his gift. Its not hard to listen and take notes when all the sermons are good ones.KagomeShuko said:Sometimes people think I'm asleep during the sermon. . .LOL. .but it helps me to concentrate on it if I close my eyes and listen. Does your pastor know you hold his feet to the fire regarding his sermons?Rechtgläubig said:All our sermons are posted online Saturday night, I just print mine out
Actually, he did change it once. I paniced!!! LOL! (j/k about the panicing). He really does seem to go word for word what he wrote (I read them at work Sat nights before church). It used to freak me out because he almost never preaches from behind the pulpit, only when he reads from his bible, no notes or anything, practically word for word what he posts on his site.Luthers Rose said:Does your pastor know you hold his feet to the fire regarding his sermons?Has he ever just gone off...and flew in the face of the pre-established text? Just curious.
You and I have discussed this before...my pastor puts NOTHING in writing and I think that gives him inordinate freedoms!!!Actually, though, the sermons can vary a little between first and second service. And there is a minor problem with this...when you need a written copy for reference...there ain't one to be had. I have to rely on my notes....R
I tried taking notes on sermons before, but it just never seemed to work for me. I just ended up with a notebook full of notes I didn't understand all that much. If I hear something I want, I'll make sure to write it, though. However, if I'm just sitting trying to listen, I'll start doing other things like looking at the hymns and such while the sermon is being preached.Luthers Rose said:Well, I'll admit it...I am a sermon junkie. But I understand, Bridget...I always shut my eyes during prayer and even other parts of the liturgy so I can concentrate. The liturgy can be a problem for me because I sometimes catch the words rolling off my tongue before they have been processed in my brain. It helps me when I close my eyes to remove the distractions and focus on what is being said. I used to keep my eyes closed for focus during the Words of Institution but after I saw the movie The Passion I started watching instead...I haven't had trouble focusing since. I am afraid some could accuse me of sleeping through half the service too!
Peace
Rose
I have the attention span of a ferret or a kitten... I can't keep my mind on the sermon for more than about 2 minutes at a time, though my mind does generally wander off on tangents generated by the sermon. Still, it's frustrating getting home and only having a very vague idea of what the sermon was about.KagomeShuko said:I tried taking notes on sermons before, but it just never seemed to work for me.
