  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello, Daniel Martinez here. Yeah, I submitted to them, once. You get your poem published, but they might mess it up. I submitted a poem called 'She Smiles so Brightly' and they messed all the wording up; considering that the 'ly' in 'brightly' kind of made up the whole flow of the poem and they just decided to take it right out (in the book, it's titled 'She Smiles so Bright'). Also, they encourage you to purchase one of their "beautiful books," a sure sign that they are not a legitimate company. They're not the best place to go, if you're just starting out - nor if you've been doing it for a while.

Novelist

I've posted about 10 poems there over the last 5 years, but I've never bought a book from them so I've never seen the actual publication...They always send me a letter asking if the poem is correct before they say they publish it though. In fact they have published so many of them now that they stopped sending me the "we want to publish this poem" notice and started sending me the "We are holding a spot for you in our newest book, if you'd like to fill it" notice. And I never pay them anything... :)

Yeah, unfortunately, I sent in a poem to them. :o (Warning, rant ahead!)

My poem got chosen as a finalist in the contest, but to continue in the competition, I had to first write another poem (which they accepted), and THEN to be eligible for the prize I would have had to take an expensive trip to their conference at Disney World. Oh, and after I missed the deadline for signing up for the trip, they sent me an email saying that since I couldn't make it, I could pay a few hundred dollars to have one of their "professional readers" read my poem and thus make it eligible for the contest.

I'm not strongly against poetry.com or anything...I suppose they have to get the money to support their nice grand prize (not to mention make a nice profit) somewhere. And I'm happy for the people who do win. But it seems more like entering the lottery than a writing contest, and the price for entering isn't exactly cheap. Plus, since they kind of have a bad reputation in the publishing world, being published by them could actually do more harm than good...which is why I would like to figure out how to remove my poem from their website... :p

Yep.

One of my poems even got nominated to become published. I was 11-years-old at the time so I begged my parents to buy the book. I thought I was all that and a bag of chips until I found a poem (I've even memorized the horrible, little thing; it personifies shame for me):

"Drugs are bad.
Hugs are good."

Utter waste of money. It got even worse. They kept sending me things inviting me to an orientation of "other distinguished poetry.com authors" in Washington D.C. (didn't fall for that one, MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA), and requested my permission on several different occassions to publish the poem in some other books and even on audio cassette.

I gave them written permission to do so but the suckers didn't get so much as a penny out of me.

So, be careful. They're really not as important as they make themselves out to be--- dratted official-looking envelopes...

The problem with places like poetry.com is that they are basically appealing to peoples' vanity. Unfortunately, poetry is one of those artforms that people tend to think is easy. Unlike painting, or music, or even macrame, they think that it is all about "inspiration" rather than hard work.

So they pen their deathless verses ("Drugs are bad/ hugs are good" for instance) in a couple of minutes, don't revise, don't correct the metre or think about the rhyme, have probably never read any poetry since they did Wordsworth at school, certainly nothing by a living contemporary poet. Then they think, "this is great! Other people would love it!" So they send it off to a publisher. Any sensible publisher wouldn't touch such drivel with a barge-pole; it would damage their reputation.

Websites & publishers exist to exploit people like this. They exist to make money out of people who think poetry is easy. But real poetry involves a lot of reading, a lot of study and thinking and a lot of work - and yes, it also involves inspiration.

Real publishers pay you for the hard work you've put in. Not enough (as I can testify, as a published poet) but they do pay you.

PS: The worst kind of poetic garbage often comes from those who say "God/Jesus has given me this poem." They show you some sanctimonious piece dripping with sentimental cliche and expect you to praise it. The best response is probably to ask, in a sarcastic tone of voice, "Why was Jesus passing on his rubbish to you? Don't they have recycling bins in heaven?" They might think you a terrible reprobate, but they won't show you their "poetry" again. ;)

Here is a poem that was published at Poetry.com a few years back in the book "Hidden Frontiers".

No biggy because at that time everyones poems got published....... Good, Bad, okay and so so... So who's to say what category mine came under... It was just fun to have it published and yes it cost me to have it published...

Eternal Life
To God, My Inspiration
You came to us so long ago,
To give us life, your blood did flow.
But all was not lost, you rose to reign,
In our lives you still remain.
For those of us who believe in you,
Eternal Life we are due.

I just like to think of it as a nice place to store my poetry online - don't have to ever give them a cent and they keep it nively stored there and you can direct friends and family and others there to check them out - saves disc space... and just never really knew better I guess altho I did 'get' the thing about everyone's poetry being published.... guess if anyone reads this and DIDN'T get a poem published they will feel very bad...

Incidentally if anyone wants to check some of my stored stuff put brett anderson into the search engine and scroll down to brett peter anderson and there are about 20 of my poems - some really good and some okay...

God bless yas
