• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi,

I hope that people read this, and pray for me. Please.
I am a baby christian, I love the Lord very much. I am learning as much as I can.

I still smoke. This is a terrible problem for me. It is causing me terrible health problems. I am 38 years old, and I have smoked since I was about 9 or 10 years old, which I know was very young. I am very depressed about this. I want to quit very much, I am praying about this all of the time.

My husband also smokes. He is not a christian. This makes quitting just more difficult.

I can't breathe... It scares me very much,. If I die, will god forgive me?? I have made a terrible mistake, in smoking, and in not quitting long ago.. Now I am struggling so much to quit. It makes me cry, because I
have wasted my life on a cigarette. Why?? I am so sorry to god..

Please, pray for me.. Please don't just say you will..
My name is Becky. Please pray for help in me quitting, and also pray for my lungs.

I am so terribly sorry...

Thanks so much,,
Becky

becky, dear, my thoughts are with you. i am a 25 year old guy - and i smoke. it's a terrible habit that i can't seem to kick. but i know it must be done. if it's any comfort, your story has been an inspiration for me.

at any rate, please look into any plans of action you can. have you tried patches? gum? zyban? hypnosis? cold turkey? there are a number of options out there - please don't give up. i haven't. talk to your doctor and ask him what the best plan of attack, for you, is.

and remember, no matter what your husband does - you need to quit for YOU and your health. not for anyone or anything else.

my thoughts are with you and i sincerely wish you the best. good luck & don't lose hope!

Hi,

Thanks so much for your reply. It gives me great hope that you, and others here will read my story, and do whatever it takes to quit smoking. It's the most important thing anyone can do for your family and your health. I pray that I can be an inspiration for others. :prayer:

My only option I feel is cold turkey. I can't use the othes, due to a medication I take. I have used the patch before, and I know it works, I just didn't keep using it. :sigh:

Thanks again for responding. This is very depressing. But I am going to try and fight this addiction to these cigs. I am praying for strength.

Please continue to pray for me. I really appreciate it.

Love and Prayers,
Becky

Yo !

I chew nicotine gum for years.... before realising cold turkey looks like the only option that "works".

Well, it s been 8 days now :)

Good luck... The 3 first day can be difficult to cope with (like, thinking about nothing but cigarette all days long) , then it is more easy.

I guess the trick is to be _happy_ about quitting and appreciate the craving for what they are: a dying addiction...

Take care !

Hey Becky,

I am praying for you all the way. I have quit many times and every time I take the habit back up I feel like a failure until I realised that I am not perfect. Smoking is a major struggle for me and the temptation tro smoke is huge. My last smoke was over 2 months ago now but if I had of kept my quit date intact it would be about 7 months (this time). The longest I have quit for before taking it back up (or having another one) would be about 3 months.

I am not a perfect role model in all of this but I know my biggest downfall is good old alcohol and being around other smokers. Unfortunately for you your husband still smokes so it makes it harder and as a non-Christian his reasons for quitting will have to be different. The best way to strat is to make rules and to also find your triigers or times you like to smoke. For me it was always before going to bed. Night time was my fave time to smoke. You can start with simple things lie - no smoking inside, in the car, when you go out make sure that you only carry a set amount of smokes with you and know that when you run out that is it. Smoking is not only an addiction but a habit so you need to break the habit before the addiction. Read as much as you can about it and never give up hope. For without hope we are lost and hope is one of the greatest gifts that God has given us. It can be easy for some and for others like me it is a major battle but everyone is different. There is no right/wrong way just make sure you don't give up this addiction for another (like chewing tobacco!).

I hope this helps. With love and prayers, Evie
PS we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God. God loves because you are His child not because you do or do not smoke

All of you are in my prayers. I know I don't associate much with this topic, I have lots of friends at school who smoke and one of them going strong in giving up. I may not know exactly how you feel, but I just wanted to encourage you by letting you know that God is with you and he will give you the strength to quit.
God Bless you all
Kathryn
