I am a youth pastor at a church that runs about 20 young people (ages 12 - about 22). They are pushing me to talk to the pastor about building a building totally dedicated to the youth. I know as a sign of "good faith" in staying with the project he is going to want us to raise the money. I figure about $60,000 will get us most of it done. Any ideas on fundraisers that will not totally depend on our church footing the bill? A church will give, but after a while they get tired of being asked for money. Thanks for all your advice.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Our church is making a new building for youth ministry it will be totally awesome! anyway, a thing our church is doing is for new orleans they have a concert for people who still are recovering...you could do this for the building you guys are creating.

We have a "paper gator" in our church parking lot that brings in about $100 a month (I think) just from people bringing in their junk mail/newspapers.

This may be a given, but if you have a concert, you can ask area businesses for donations to have their names listed or have an advertisement in the program.

First determine who you want to serve through this building. If you reach out to the community youth (not just youth in your youth group), you can reach out to the local community for support!! I work for a non-profit youth outreach and we receive a great deal of support from outside companies (like Target).

Hmm... these for me is an interesting thing to bring up. First off... for me personally I'd want to know why they want a building dedicated to them. Why not have it dedicated to Christ? I don't meant to come accross as judgement, for I have no intentions.
I know I'm guilty of it a lot of times, but I think that sometimes we need to be content with the gifts and blessings that God has given us. Proverbs 16:9. In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. If you feel like God is calling you to get this building going, pray about it, and plan a course, and thy LORD will direct you

No offense taken to the question as it is a viable question. But having worked with youth for a few years now, I have learned that you must first capture the youth's attention before you can capture their hearts. I guess you could say that it is a lure for young people(even for the ones from our church). In an age of ipods, playstation, wii, nintendo, MTV, etc. sitting around singing amazing grace and older songs such as this (even though this has it's place and having the spirit move is more important than anything) just does not cut it for the younger generation.
I agree that your steps should be ordered by GOD and you should be in his will. The bible also mentions that faith without works is dead. I've got faith that if we can get the young people there that GOD will do the rest. That being said, if the youth are allowed(within reason) to choose what they would like the place that they have church to look like then they are more likely to come consistantly and bring others with them. It is my job & calling to keep them there and get others there and that is my limitation. The rest is up to HIM.

How about a benefit auction with service/product donations from area businesses/people in the church/community?

Our youth particaipated in a fundraiser were they sold retail coupons for a local retail store. They raise $2500. You would have to contact your local retail stores to inquiry about a fundraiser project. Other fundraiser were car washes, bake sale, fashion/talent show and a seasonal bazaar (We raise about $8000).

Getting licenses, doing impact studies are all required in my region. That's if you have land to dedicate to the building.

there's always the basics... car wash, hot dog sales and stuff. i dunno if you've ever heard of an ice cream place called "mootown"... or if there's even one anywhere near where you live. but if you talk to them, they'll let you have a certain percentage of their profits for a day if you had out fliers for your cause in front of their store... or something like that. and i'm sure there's other places who would do stuff like that too. that takes your fundraising out of the church so that you're not depending soley on the congregation. oh, walmart also usually allows people to hold bake sales at their doors... just pray about it, if its what God has in mind, it'll happen.

My advice, don't bother with the building. There is plenty to do outside the church rather than create a place for people to come. The church already has a building for that.
I think the best youth ministries are those that reach out to the community. Find an outreach every week like to a shelter, hospital, kids club, Habitat project. Go to the $1 movie. Have a bowling night. Do stuff outside the church, like Christ did. He never had a facility. He went to the people.
I agree with an earlier post, when kids have access to all these gadgets, gizmos, and technology, why invest in a modern facility that will be out of date by the time you build it?
The kids need to be active and I think you'll be surprised at home succesful an out-reach based ministry can be. If you have an activity in the church, it could be just once a month. No need for a youth building for that. Get out, enjoy, go camping, hiking, whatever, but God didn't intend the church to be built as a building; he intended it to be built in its people. Going to them is the best way to bring them to you.

I respectfully disagree. Kids are entertained so much -- the church doesn't have to compete. (Besides, we're never going to be as entertaining as MTV -- we should focus on teaching.) -- Not that church should be boring, but I think a better use of the money (rather than the video game systems, pool tables, video systems, even a youth dedicated building) would be to hire college students to intern in the youth ministry come alongside the students. (Wouldn't you rather your High School students hang out with an older (and thus cooler) college student who would do fun things with them and encourage their faith?

I think the students in this situation need to be re-directed. The desire for a building for themselves may be selfish. (sinful.) Particularly because they're such a small group.
If they had out grown all available rooms for them, then it's an other issue. -- If they felt that God was going to massivly grow their group then that would be different as well, but I would want to see the students acting in faith to grow the group as well as raising the funds.
But then again, I'm not at that church and I don't know those students.
