It says in 2 Corinthians 6:14 (NKJV), "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?", which can apply to marriage. The footnote in my Bible also gives a cross reference with Deuteronomy 22:10, which says, "You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together." I interpret this as saying to not get so closely yoked (or get too close in the relationship) with the unbeliever.

This leads me to believe that it should be fine to casually date this young lady, as this would be an opportunity to try to witness to her, and lead her to salvation. However, the above Scriptures say that you should not marry her as long as she is still an unbeliever.

Pray over the situation; that the Lord will give you the right words to say to her as you share God's Word with her. If she accepts Jesus as her Lord and Savior -- wonderful!!

And if she doesn't -- well then, God may have another plan for you. You're only 20, and you're bound meet many other girls. There's no hurry and God knows what's best.

Hope this is helpful, and God bless you. :)

If a difference in faith is going to cause problems for your relationship, then you need to consider that.

If you are both the kinds of people that thrive on difference, then all is well.

ps. bible quotes helpful
The bible is a book to spend a lifetime learning from, not a set of micro-instructions to make all your decisions for you.

Stop asking us (or anyone else); the person you need to be talking to about this is HER.

1 Cor 7
12To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

15But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. 16How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

I don't see any reason that it would necessarily upset God.
How does your girlfriend feel about your Christianity?
The most serious question is what are you going to do about children.

It is advisable for you to mary a foller of Jesus Christ.
God will not consume you with angry fire for marrying a non-christian, but he does advise you not to. He does this because you will (in most cases) be led astray.

The Bible givs a very clear answer:
1 Kings 11

1But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites:

2Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.

3And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.

4For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

5For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

6And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father.

7Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

8And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.

9And the LORD was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice,

CONCERNING YOU TRYING TO SHOW GOD YOUR FAITH: Ephesians 2 : "7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast."
Faith is confidence by deffinition.

You should not make this relationship any more serious unless she gets saved. Pray for her, love her, treat her right, witness to her. If she breaks up with you, only God should be the reason. And do not give her a false picture of God with the way you act or handle the situation.

I agree with and appreciate all the above replies.

is it bad that my girlfriend (who i intend to marry one day) is not christian?
It is not bad to have a grilfriend who is not a christian. In fact it shows that we have the Love of Christ in us just like Christ loved us and died for us even when we were sinners.

Is it an insult in God or will it upset him.
It is certainly not an insult to God nor will it upset Him.

I want to help her see the light
If you think that by maintaining your friendship, marital-relationship with her she will see the Light it may or may not work out. Because a person is saved through the Grace and Spirit of Lord Jesus Christ alone. None of us can really change another person in anyway. Some christians had to live with their non-christian spouses all throughout their life. Some christians were able to lead their non-christian spouses to the Lord. There is no surity that our life-partner will change.

but can we be boyfriend and girlfriend or will this upset God a lot.
You can be as a good boyfriend to her. But, this is a risky area in case one of you becomes really serious to get married without the other person being interested in anyway. And that may result in feelings of hurt for both of you.

I think the following Scripture verses are useful in this context -

1 Corinthians 7:12-16 - But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. 13 And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. 14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. 15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. 16 For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?

Amos 3:3 - Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

2 Corinthians 6:14 - Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

Since you have not yet proposed to her verbally about your love for her or the intention of getting married to her then you still have chances of considering some other girl who is a christian so that both of you are agreed as far as Faith and Doctrine is concerned and can walk the christian walk together in life.

But, no one is perfect and we cannot expect to find a perfect life-partner suited to us in every way. Marriage i guess is something which has to be worked out between the two partners in order to make it happy, successful and fulfilled. Then, both the partners are able to reach their potential in life and live for the glory of God.

Awe, matters of the heart, and how difficult they can be. I can only tell you through my very own experience that an unequal yoking can cause many problems!! Be very cautious here!
Pray on it. Pray for her that she may be lead to the Holy Spirit through you. Leading by example is also a good way to show someone how wonderful and fulfilling being a Christian can be.
There is always the possibility that this is not the woman for you. Take your time! I believe that God will make it apparent to you on how to proceed. If she isn't the one, you can be certain, that he will send a Christian woman to you. That you can fellowship and share your faith with!
I will pray for you as well and please keep us informed as to how things go.
