"I will come to you.......and I will find out not the talk of these arrogant people, but their power. For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk,...... but in power - 1 Corinthians 4:19-20, RSV

What power is this?

Was it power for exciting novelties? In fact, the Corinthians, were full of the thought of all the gifts they had, and they boasted about them in full.
In v. 8 Paul acknowledges this trait, albeit with semi-sarcasm.

No it wasn't power for the miraculous that Paul is looking for here, but rather the power for holy, Christ-like living: and that is the missing element in their living.

He goes on to say in 5: 1, "It is actually reported that there is immorality among you." He is thinking about Holy Living.

Christianity is caught as much as taught; but it seems that the Corinthians were hardly living an infectious kind of Christianity. Their evangelism had descended just to the level of proselytism; they were really engaged in sheep-stealing (6b) Join our party, come to our group.
That is not evangelism, and Paul sees this nauseating brand of Christianity for what it is - plastic discipleship.

My own observation is that large numbers of us, young and old, experienced and immature, are drop-outs.

Neglecting our responsibility to society; leaving the field to the humanists and the violent revolutionaries.......Let us get it clear, that if we cannot act as purifying salt today in society, as holy people of God, then society itself is going to rot us.

It is war today. "Forget about your words, your claims,' says Paul, 'where is your power - your power for holy living? It wasn't that there isn't power available. The marvellous thing about the Christian life is that when we step into Christ there is power, because He gives us the Holy Spirit. What robs us of power is plain rank disobedience.

Dear Cavell. Plastic Discipleship has a missing element, it is not power, it is
holy, Christlike living. What is Christlike living? Jesus tells us in:
"Matthew 22: 35-40: The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds. The second is like it:
love our neighbour as we love ourselves." Then Jesus points out: " On these
two Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." Christlike living is what Jesus points out, IF it is not as Jesus told us to, it is Plastic Discipleship.
Without Love, this strong element, it is Plastic. How do we get it?
We ask in Matthew 7: 7-10: for much Love and Joy, then we thank God, and share all Love and Joy with our neighbour around us. We keep asking and receiving, then thanking God and share it all with our neighbour. God will approve, and God will Bless us. God is Love, and God wants loving sons and daughters. Plastic love is powerless, but the love God gives us is POWERFUL.
The Bible tells us: " Repent and Be Born Again," change from being without love to be loving and caring to our neighbour. Love God first with hearts, with souls, and with minds, then love all around us as we love our selves:
Be always kind, compassionate and helpful when the need arises.
Jesus our Saviour will help and guide us: JESUS IS THE WAY.
No plastic Discipleship as Cavell points out, but Love with heart, with soul, and with mind, for God our Heavenly Father, and love as we LOVE OURSELVES, for our neighbour. I say this with love, Cavell. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

I agree with this 100%. I don't want to be a plastic disciple. I want to be a true follower and servant of Christ. This is so true, so many modern American Christians are falling for the trap of greed and materialism. We want instant gratification. All good things must wait. Love is the most important element.

God bless, peace be with you.
