For some reason I was thinking about the food we ate and I began to think if god wants us to eat all this processed food, with us not knowing all the things that are in them and what they can do to our bodies. So I wanted to know if anyone here could shine the light on this because of course in the bible people grew their own food(agriculture) but now we eat things with preservatives and additives(processed food), and not only that but some of those products we are eating for all we know of could have been tampered with, so we are trusting our lives with men. Does anyone agree or do you have any other theories.

Might be twisted logic, but by eating something that might have been tampered with I think I'm more likely to be trusting God to protect me than I am to be trusting that man didn't do anything to it. Along those lines, if I grow the food, I'm trusting myself because I know what went into it and can attest to it's quality. Or at least that's one way of looking at it.

Personally I take Matthew 15:11 literaly. "Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man."
then Matthew 15:17+18 17Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? 18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.

As such it's not a matter of what you eat (within reason, don't try eating 3 day old raw chicken based on that verse.)

Hi there!

Are we going for "legalism" here? Where would we draw the line?

There were "additives" in the foods eaten by the Jewish nation in the form of spices and herbs... and some of those additives were given by God in the instructions He provided. Eating healthy is a good thing, but there is no indication that Jesus, a Jew, ate anything that was outside Jewish culture... for example, swine. While he ate with Gentiles, that doesn't mean that he forsake the Jewish laws concerning food.

I think the best answer is as it is in all things...

"moderation"

I don't think it's really a question of additives or what was done during the biblical era. I think it is a question of how we are to live out the responsibility of stewardship over the earth and care for our bodies. People in developed countries generally, and Americans particularly, eat way too much. This is both wasteful of the earth's bounty (stewardship) and bad for our bodies. When we gorge ourselves on cheap processed foods made with hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, etc., we are harming ourselves and our fellow man in countless tiny ways that add up rather quickly.

Taking another tack, I don't think God requires us to be vegetarians, but I do think we have to understand what is necessary to get meat to your table. After reading how pork is produced, I don't eat it any more because I can't reconcile it with my Christian faith. Generally speaking, I eat a lot less meat now than I used to, because I want to live more lightly.

I think the key is to be aware of the consequences of your food choices, just as you should be aware of the consequences of all of your actions. This doesn't mean you have to live on nuts and berries. What it means is that choices should be genuine choices--i.e., decisions made after weighing the benefits and costs of your various options.

By additives, it can mean, harmful, chemicals added to foods to enhance flavours, or to preserve foods for longer periods, or to make foods tender, or to colour foods.
It is not referring to the natural and harmless seasonings 'added' to their foods.

I believe that this is all happening in the name of a 'quicker buck' for the manufacturers. I don't think they give a damn about the health of the general population, only how to make our bread softer, or how to make that disgusting meatless meat-pie taste delicious.
And, besides, we've got to keep the Medical profession in business too.

I try to grow as many of my own vegies as possible, and stay away from as much processed food as I can.

Shalom from Bon
