  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How do you show reverence around your sacramentals and other religious items? Mine is a little OCD, but I don't like to put the medals and crucifix on my necklace face down when I take it off. I also kiss the cover of my Bible before I open it and after I close it. Does anyone else do any such thing?

I have but not on a regular basis.

My favorite chaplain would reverently kiss a Bible, medal, or crucifix and then hold it out for us to do likewise. I regularly kiss the cruxifix on my Rosary before saying my Rosary. I also keep a couple extra Rosaries hanging on my walls. I will often stop to make sure the crucifixes are turned outwards--if they aren't, well I turn them so that they do.

For my icons and tabletop/wall crucifixes I bow three times and make the sign of the cross three times when I pass them. For medals I just kiss them and place them face side up.

Yes. I always wipe my Bible off after setting a can of soda on it for a while. I would feel irreverent if I left a ring of condensation on it.

I actually constantly have to constantly try to not put a can of coke on my Bibles. My nightstand is covered with books so room is scarce, usually I'll catch myself and set it on your common fiction novel instead.

Do you one better, I will not allow anything to be put on top of my Bible(s). Not any other books. Not any papers. They are special.

Yeah, this is a product of my Baptist schooling. We didn't put anything on our Bible. I actually don't put anything on my Qur'an because of respect for other religions. But that one finds a place on my floor collecting dust while my Bible is on my nightstand where I have to actively find space to put objects.

I have also kissed the crucifix on my rosary. Glad to see I'm not just being OCD.

I also kiss the crucifix on my Rosary before & after reciting the prayers. I have a Rosary with a sturdy cord, not chain, and I wrap that around my hand/wrist to go to sleep. If I wake up during the night I begin reciting the Rosary to go back to sleep.

I've awoken several times to my rosary being around my left wrist when I'd fallen asleep with it in my pocket.

Before I learned to wrap my Rosary around my wrist at night, I used to just clutch my Rosary in my hand all night. (BTW I don't recommend it.) I still remember waking one morning to finding it hopelessly knotted. Just then I was called away for a couple of moments. When I returned, fully expecting to spend even more time trying to unknot the Rosary (so it could be used again), I found it completely unknotted and just laying there!
