Picard wins--hands down, no question. I love his diplomacy, offhand humor, love of classics (Shakespeare and classical music), European flair--and that the fact that he is embodied by the suave, and sexy Patrick Stewart doesn't hurt either. He's one of my ideal men among TV characters. combine him with Vincent from "Beauty and the Beast" and ladies, you have the perfect man!

Piccard would never have made ensign in the real world. Not only did he surrender the first time, he spent the whole first season looking for unknown hostiles to surrender to, unconditionally. He wasn't a diplomat he was a coward, and if he ever made it to a ship would have been charged with deriliction of duty long before being faced with a challenge.

The character Kirk was a true man of peace, he gained the upper hand and then negociated peace. When, in the original Star Trek, did they blast something that didn't shoot first? He grieved the death of his adversaries, (in the series).

Piccard jeopardized the lives of his crew and colleages as a matter of habit, and hated those who gave him the most help, and who pushed him to mature as a person and as leader.

...and how can any fan of Next Imitation have a problem with bad acting, Jonathan Frakes, Denise Crosby, Gates McFadden, Will Wheaton.

And the writers...the first episode was a conglomeration of three Star Trek episodes, and the second episode of Next Imitation was just "The Naked Time" with different characters. They didn't even rename it.

Right. And Kirk surrendering to Khan is...just a fluke? Oh, and he surrendered right *after* he got caught flatfooted and blasted by a ship that hadn't answered a hail. Piccard would have raised shields at least!

Refresh my memory, who did Picard first surrender to?

It was a complete unknown to him at the time, so he unconditionally surrendered to an unknown enemy of unknown strength, with unknown intents.

It turned out to be Q, who at the time was also, unknown to him, and for that matter he never did figure out that Q saved his butt every time they encountered one another.

Well, not being a writer for Star Trek I can only guess what they would have him do, but in "The Corbomite Manuver," Kirk tried talking, and when that failed, he tried breaking away. Like in the Next Imitation, (since the "Corbomite Manuver" was one of the episodes pilfered for "Mission at Farpoint"), Kirk had no chance, but since he didn't fire first, and sent out the "friendship" messages, the alien ended the test favorably for Kirk.

Piccard just surrendered, without trying to discover anything about his adversary.

Picard won the day tho as I recall! And later managed to get Q, with Riker's help, in some hot water with the Continuum.

PLEASE!!! What an insult to BillyJack! Billyjack was awesome! Piccard is awesome! Kirk, well he is like a balloon. You take out the hot air, and what is left? I can't even stand to watch the old Star Treks because his arrogance just takes over the whole show. Kirk is all about Kirk, period.

Since they are both fictional characters, (and the protagonists), of course they both win the day. One was originally written by respected writers, and one was written by union writers who recyclesd old Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica scripts for the first 4 seasons of the series, only with weaker characters.

Kirk is my favorite.. though he couldn't beat Pic in a fight

Like I said in my previous post, I never watched after Picard surrendered the ship.
It took 20 years for Kirk to surrender. One big mistake in 20 years, he didn;t put his shields up. Picard surrendered on the first show. And he didn't just surrender 400 people, but the whole section attached to the starship.
When Kirk surrendered what was the crew count?
10? (I might be wrong, but they didn't have a full crew did they? I am only half a Trekie. Watched because the rest of the family wanted to watch, and then we only had one t.v., remember those days..... I'm getting old.)
Now back to my originla question:
Several posters stated Picard would beat Kirk in a fight,
I hope they mean in their primes, because Kirk now wouldn't be able to beat many in a fight, hes what 75?
Was Picard in many fights? And did he win? Does he know martial arts? Kirk was always going at people hand to hand. Kirk even fought Spock, a Vulcan that is stronger then humans.
I thought Picard was a talker?

He took the ship into a situation and surrendered it.

I never watched after that.

Kirk almost destroyed the Enterprise many times.
Piccard got his ship and surrendered to the first conflict.

I don't know Q, so I don't know his strengths or weakness. All I know is Kirk took 20 years to surrender the Enterprise, Piccard the first episode.

Piccards ship wasn't a starship but a science vessel.
By the time the ship seperated they would be destroyed. The old Enterprise could have destroyed Pickards ship while it seperated. Killing a whole lot more then the 400 crew on the old Enterprise.
Didn't like much of the new Star trek shows.
