• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Nice picture! Something to try next time: use daylight fill flash to bring out his/her eyes.
Ok now how do I do that? :) I have a Nikon coolpix 3700 and I had it set to auto..we were having a sunny/cloudy day and going in and out of buildings so I thought that would be my best option.

I don't know all the controls on the Nikon 3700, but almost all cameras allow you to choose the "flash all the time" setting. (usually the lightning bolt icon) The camera will then balance the flash with the light it is reading from the subject. My Nikon lets me choose to have the flash subdued so that it is not obvious. (Try the minus 1.3 setting). This means that the flash will flash at a level a stop and a third less than the overall light setting. With a great subject like that bear, try it with and without flash to see what you like better.

A more natural way would also be to have someone hold a large white reflector (such as posterboard or one of those silver or gold things you can get) next to the bear's face, but just outside of the photo frame. It will naturally reflect about a stop less light right into the bear's face. A good candidate for such a job would be one's ex (husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend). ;)

ROTF!
I love my camera but I'm still trying to get use to all the functions. I'm still not sure how to blur the background behind my subject...sigh.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try it later on today!

To blur background, you may have to get out of full automatic mode. To blur background you limit depth of field. Switch camera to "AP" (Aperture priority) mode, and choose the largest aperture (which will be the smallest number). Your camera will automatically choose the right shutter speed to go with the aperture. Using the optical zoom, zoom out as much as you can (the longer the focal length of the lens, the more limited the focused depth of field.) "Digital zoom" has no effect on depth of field. Now make sure your shutter speed is fast enough for hand held photography (1/focal length of lens), and you will have as blurry a background as your camera will allow.

Since the focal length of most digital cameras is relatively small, it can be difficult to blur the background enough. There is also a way to do that in photoshop.

Also, if you can't figure out the fill-flash setting and you are shooting in broad daylight, just turn the flash on full power. There is no way that the small flash on your camera is brighter than the sun. The problem here you might run into is that if you move into shade, you could wash things out. But in bright light, the full power flash would make a nice fill.

Great Shot!
