  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am really interested in taking a photography class. I love photography, I feel as though I have an "eye" for it, have gotten a lot of compliments on my pictures, etc...but I know there is so much more that I could do if I knew how.

I'd really like to turn this into more of a hobby and maybe even do some freelance work.

I'm having a hard time finding classes though! I have looked into classes at 2 local colleges, but they are both nearly impossible to get into unless you are an art major at the school - because they get first priority.

Does anyone have suggestions of different places to look that might offer a photography class besides local colleges? I'm drawing a blank as to what other facilities might would offer classes.

Have you taken a photography class? If so, where did you take it? Maybe you can inspire me or trigger something in my brain that seems to be dead at the moment! :D

I learnt just about everything about photography from books I bought and webpages. Look on Google, there are lots of helpful websites. Once you start reading the same thing over and over, you'll know you've got most of the important things. other than that, the best advice is to go out and take photos, putting into practise the things you have read. See how they work, and once you are familiar with using the techniques, try playing around with them and see how you can change the results.

My view on photography is make it a personal picture.

A once in a life time picture.
Anyone can go out a take a picture of the ocean at sunrise/sunset. Do something to make it different.

Find the shots that others wouldn't see. Or the shot that is rare.

Last summer I took 10 pictures of one flower in our yard. Just to see what looks best.(digital) I took it from every direction, including where the shadow was.

Maybe what I am saying is don't look at life just from the road less traveled, but from the trail blazed by you.

Also look at other peoples work, decide why you like it or why you don't. And then decide how you could improve or change it.

Simple changes could be light(natural or artificial) darker or brighter, height of the camera to the target.

Just play with the camera and what your shooting. And have fun. It will show in your work.

Ditto to what Bill said.

And in addition to that: SHOOT! SHOOT! SHOOT!

Like he said about taking 10 pictures of the same flower from different angles, you just have to go out and try all kinds of different things. I've done the very same thing dozens of times with different subjects.

And as Tiberius said, you can start by reading books and visiting websites such as betterphoto.com and fredmiranda.com. Both have incredible resources and photographers to critique your work.

As for myself, I have not had any classes. All I've done is take pictures of my particular subject hundreds of times, post my results for feedback, and change what needs changing. I've established my niche in the industry, perfected my skills, and have now started my own business.

Good luck!
