There is the Concordia Self Study Bible that CPH published with some revisions to the NIV Study Bible.

Here is what mine says about "work out your salvation."

Work it out to the finish; not a reference to the attempt to earn one's salvation by works, but to the expression of one's salvation in spiritual growth and development. Salvation is not merely a gift received once for all; it expresses itself in an ongoing process in which the believer is strenously involved (cf. Mt 24:13; 1Cor 9:24-27; Heb 3:14, 6:9-11; 2Peter 1:5-8) -- the process of perseverence, spiritual growth and maturation. "fear and trembling" Not because of doubt or anxiety; rather, the reference is to an active reverence and a singleness of purpose in response to God's grace.

Thanks  , that's comforting.

My son has the bible you are talking about. He got it from his LCMS godmother. It looks very tattered...that makes me happy. :)

What does the second part of this verse mean?
-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,

I was reading in Phil. tonight (while having CF on), and I find that verse perplexing. Are there any Pastors out there yet this evening?

thank you

Finish the sentence. Verse 13 is the rest of the sentence: "for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose."

That should answer your question.

But why should I tremble, since God is taking care of the work?

Sorry if I don't sound too bright here. I do know there is nothing I can do to add to my salvation, that's why this verse is difficult for me, I guess.

It is not a "fear" as in being afraid, but "fear" in terms of reverence and respect.

Remember the catechism: "We should fear and love God so that..."
The Study Bible has this, that DaRev is saying:

"fear and trembling" Not because of doubt or anxiety; rather, the reference is to an active reverence and a singleness of purpose in response to God's grace.

I interepret this to mean that we should "fear" and love God in ALL things.

Thanks Rev and QuiltAngel, you've answered my question. :)

Maybe I should have a 'seajoy's Q&A thread.' There's so much I don't know, or have forgotten, about the bible. Most folks here are so well versed on everything.
Please bear with me on all my questions...I'm learning every day. Thank you

I have the MacArthur, NKJV Bible. My pastor's wife really likes it and wants one as well, but the church keeps NIV Bibles on hand. I can't get past the language challenges and have a hard time getting away from the KJV.

You are welcome.

I would not say I am well-versed. Sometimes, we look at and read a passage and wonder. I am sure there are plenty of verses I would have to ask about.

This is the kind of discussion I like. An online Bible Study.

When I'm on the computer, I use e-sword, because I can use a bunch of different versions, and they have a number of commentaries as well. And it's free.

I alternate between my New Geneva Study Bible (NKJV, with Reformed commentary) and the NIV Study Bible (NIV, obviously, with text-translation notes). I've considered getting a Concordia Study Bible so I can have specifically Lutheran commentary, but I'm hoping they'll come out with an ESV one.

And when I want to do a word or topic study, I usually reach for my old, ratty Thompson Chain Reference NIV, which I used in college. It doesn't have commentary, but there is are hundreds of "chains" of verses that connect to one another. It's really easy to follow a topic through the Bible, reading each linked verse in its own context before moving on to the next one.

His tattered bible is getting married??
:D In an earlier post, I mentioned my son's tattered bible...and I was happy about it (means he's reading it)...and Dinki is looking for a good lutheran boy...I told her he's already taken, and not to get her hopes up. (sorry...it's the pain meds, please forgive) :sorry:
